Yir-Update 3/22

OK. Taking small lunchbreak here as I work on art for Hero By Night #3. Issue 2 ships off to the printer next week! Just wanted to clear my head of a few things and unwind.

#1 funny thing going down. votefortheworst.com , is a site devoted to voting for the absolute WORST person on reality tv shows like American Idol. Not only that, but the Howard Stern show and audience has gotten in on this act, so it looks like that Sanjaya guy will end up winning this years American Idol. I think this is hilarious. Like a big gigantic monkeywrench that the producers probably never saw coming. Some say this was going on last year with Taylor HIcks I guess. Maybe I was part of that problem too with the Taylor Hicks Drinking game. (sorry!) - I just think it’s funny. Picking the weirdest, worst…. man, pop-culture democracy is awesome!

This makes me miss the Yirmumah strips a bit, but honestly I’m just not feeling it. Since October I’ve been pretty much 100% Hero By Night, and I’ve been loving it. And now I get a chance to do MORE. And as comic nerdcore as it sounds, I’m just flat out looking to revolutionize the process for comic books online and new media. I think Marvel and DC have dropped the ball or missed the boat, but I’m sure they’ll follow in our footsteps. In fact, I was told people from both companies were watching what I was going to do. Do you know how strange that is to hear? I guess it’s just easier on my level to get things done quickly in that regard.

As for a return of Yirmumah strips, I’m thinking about it, I just don’t know when. It’s safe to say that right now, it’s on indefinite hiatus while I expand my horizons a bit. You know, the original YIrmumahs, as club members can read, was all about Jack Kirby coming to me in a dream and telling me to go change the comic book industry. I never thought that would actually happen, so I just did a goofy satire on it. But now, I’m drawing a super hero book. It’s just…. so weird. Like on the show LOST, right? Desmond tells Charlie that no matter how many times he saves Charlie’s life, the universe rearranges itself to make what was supposed to happen, happen. I feel kinda like that after soaking all this in.

Things I learned out in LA. No one in real comic book land really gives a crap about a “webcomics industry”, or cares that it would ever exist. It’s hobby land. Honestly the ONLY people I see who are proud and see the light as far as how webcomics, even the little guys, will be the future of comics, is Platinum. That’s not kissing ass or cheerleading, it’s just true. The name “Drunk Duck” is getting around in BIG media circles. And in those circles, maybe moving onto mass public circles, it might end up that Drunk Duck becomes a household name when people think “webcomics”. That is a real trip for me, because, if you’re versed in all things webcomics, you’d of thought it would have been Keenspot that would have done that first. Drunk Duck was always sort of the little guy down the street. It was interesting (and made me happy) to see Dylan Squires was given his own swanky little office out there at Platinum. (he needs to decorate more). But it just felt good to see SOMEONE taking it seriously. Not just saying it. Sure, lots of people talk and BS…. but there’s Dylan with a full time gig, pretty much working on slowly making Drunk Duck a household name in possibly the next 5 years or so. Drunk friggin Duck. Who could have known?? Wild.

Weird.

One thing I’ve been neglecting to mention is how it was good to come home. HOME! My wife surprised me with having a new shower installed while I was gone. Since December we’ve had to take baths in the old tub here… UGH. I mean, I got use to it, but it never felt right, or I just didn’t feel fully clean like a good old fashioned hot shower. My wife is awesome. I need to get her over her fear of flying, because I’d love her to be able to meet the people I get to go meet. She’s my better half, and makes me look better too I bet. Keeps me in line. ;) I know she enjoys her job, but one of my goals has been to make enough money drawing comics so she can just stay home and be MOM and WIFE. So, I’ll keep working hard to make that happen.

I think she’s afraid I’ll want to move to California now. Honestly I like it here in Pennsylvania just fine. Love our house, land, etc. I don’t think I’d ever live in Los Angeles, it seemed too crazy. I don’t know how my friends do it out there. Dan Taylor who works for IDW, I think he commutes from Orange County to San Diego, like a 2 hour trip! Jeez! I gotta admit though, the Platinum Offices had me jealous as crap! I’d love to go to a place like that everyday, have my office where people could pop in and see the latest art, etc. I told her if someone comes and buys all the rights to YIRMUMAH stuff for like a million bucks, I might consider moving to like Palm Springs area, which could still get me up to LA for business. Looks like LA would be a fun place to make creative things happen. — With the internet though, you can pretty much do this stuff from anywhere. I just hate meeting cool people that feel like instant friends, and you see em briefly and that’s it… it would be cool to just HANG!

Comic Book CHallenge 2 will be coming up soon. Not sure on entry deadlines, but it’ll likely take place at the next San Diego Comicon I’m sure. The big boss out there told me I was a judge on that, but I think he might have misspoke, because i don’t see any news of that anywhere. Would that be sort of weird to have the past winner as a judge? I’d gladly do it if they wanted me to. I was thinking of helping contestants like, PITCH. Just write a small “tips” section because honestly, it seems like there were a lot of good ideas that just didn’t come across well because creators couldn’t boil them down into an actual quick pitch. I think the whole thing was really fun last year. I mean, I went third in line, and I still waited around all day to listen to all the pitches, good, bad, wacky, and insane.

Lunch is over… mmmm. Turkey pot pie.– back to the drawing board for me.

I looked at the link to the postcard on E-Bay, and I found myself wanting one of those postcards. It is pretty cool looking.

Do you think you can get back to writing a few comics on Yirmamah? Maybe once a week or so? Almost all of my favorite comics have come from this site, and it is sad to see all the content leave.

p.s. Good luck with the Hero sales. I hope it gets a long run.

I think anyone with a fully-functioning brain has known for a long time that webcomics are the future of comics.

Also, in the future, webcomics will probably just be called “comics.”

    (Or possibly “DrunkDucks.” :>)

Yeah, to be clear, I was talking about outside of webcomics entirely. I don’t really think anyone with a fully functioning brain has thought that, only people IN webcomics. Outside of that, sure there’s buzz, but not a whole lot of people really give a shit, or they roll their eyes when you mention publishing online. The same way they do when your neighbor down the street says he’s a published author with his #1 selling cookbook, but you find out it’s published through lulu, and it’s only #1 selling in the “roadkill” category. And #1 selling could mean…. 10 copies. ;)

Well, I was publishing comic books professionally for about five years before I got into webcomics, and I switched my focus from print comics to webcomics (despite being somewhat successful for an indy in print comics) because I believed (and still believe) they are the future. So I’ll have to agree to disagree with you there. :)

(Also, I’d say any intelligent person knows that the web isn’t just the future of comics, but virtually EVERYTHING. Like TV, for example. I doubt networks like NBC and Fox would team up to fight YouTube if they thought otherwise…)

Chris– You’re right, and I know it, but not that many people know you for the ol’ comic industry stuff. You’re right though, the web is the future of everything. The real funny part is how no one in those industries will really say so out of fear of the hammer falling. Look at newspapers! They’ve been FAKING their circulation numbers for years in an effort to maintain ad dollars.
