YIR-NEWS! Bob’s computer and more….

Hey, if you missed the newsletter, I’ll remind you again to sign up here. Be sure to click the confirmation link in the e-mail you get!!!

Bob’s computer is done ordered through Dell. It’s the Dimension 2400 , 299 deal. Which ends up NOT being 299 at all because that’s after a “mail in rebate” , and then there was 99 dollars for shipping and tax. After the order was placed, it then says, it ships on September 16th… I’m thinking WHAT???? Damn, that seems like a long time to ship a computer out, but so be it. If Bob has to wait a little longer to be online, it’s not a big thing. On the phone, I told him, yeah, it came with a free printer, but there’s no printer cable, they cost about 20 bucks at Walmart, he was like “What the Farg???” — I’m like, “Welcome to the 21st century of computers” —- I remember a long time ago, my first printer not having a printer cable with it, also scanners use to not come with USB chords as well.

Just to clarify on the Webcomic Hurricane Relief thing… It runs on Sept 13th and 14th, so look for a special Yirmumah comic then. I was just announcing that I was involved in this endeavor. I’m also thinking to myself… I thought “Hey self, the Red Cross seems to be getting a lot of attention for donations, but places like the Salvation Army and United Way could use some love too…” — I want to emphasize again– if the webcomics community could raise $34,656.63 for Conneticon to not go bankrupt, we should be able to raise much more than that for this Hurricane relief effort. If we don’t I’m gonna be really dissappointed in the webcomic community and it’s readers. Let’s do this thang! go to www.webcomictelethon.com

You know, it’s not like we need to rush to send money in, this thing is going to go on for a LONG time. The aftermath. My wife mentioned something about the Red Cross, if you sign up with them, they’ll actually send you down there for 3 weeks to help out. If we didn’t have the kids, and our own responsibilities we can’t leave here, I think we’d both be down there doing something to help. I’d probably donate my time to clean up efforts, because I am strong like bull! Anyway, on a week like this one in America, my usual apathy for washes away and the human condition sinks in… Forget about politics, religions, wealth class… this Hurricane was the great equalizer.

On that note.. I AM pretty peeved turning on my TV and seeing people playing race cards all over the place. Kanye West?? What on earth?? You probably just HURT the donation effort on live tv with your retarded rambling about Bush hating black people. Do people with fame and money suddenly feel like they are smart enough to make a political statement on tv? Well, yeah, they do it all the time. But Kanye!? Dude, stick to singing and not political messages. Jesse Jackson? WHOA… that guy has a serious problem. — This is a time when people are showing their true colors. You’ll see the people who are trying to rally to help, and the people who are on tv talking about race issues. That to me, is a big waste of time when people are dying. Hey, Jesse Jackson looks like an able body, pretty healthy, get on a flat boat and go help in rescuing people and maybe talking to them, helping them out psychologically— not sitting in front of a camera all day saying Bush hates black people, and saying you commend Kanye West for his statement. Kanye West said “Bush hates black people”!!! And you just commended him for it! Good going, prickface!

On that note… we’re no fans of Bush here. No fans of the war… or a ton of other things the US government does. But damn, WE THE PEOPLE of the USA want to help. All nationalities, races, religions.. get up and do something!

While I see your point, remember that music is one of the most political art-forms out there, and especially Kanye’s material. And a lot of people are upset about the apparent racial issues that arose in the middle of this, so much so that even republicans in the dark red state of georgia mentioned it, so it’s not just a black person throwing the race card, it was viewed as a legitimate gripe by the community as a majority.

  2. noncogito42 Says:

I see it as more of a classist rather than racist issue cause the poor whites have to deal with it just as much as the poor blacks and the poor mexicans if there were any of us up there. bottom line is that NO and Louisana and FEMA reallly fucked up on how to deal with those who were to poor or old or sick to leave.

  3. Wang Says:

i can totally agree with that, as far as who has to suffer. I think a lot of the racial stuff came up from things like the 2 photos of people taking food, where the black man was labelled as looting, the white man as “finding” stuff for his family. they both had groceries in their hands.

  4. DJ Says:

Well, then the writer who wrote the captions should be looked at… it shouldn’t be made into a race issue abroad. Jesse Jackson and Kanye West are fucking morons.

  5. noncogito42 Says:

Wang yeah i agree that is pretty messed up.I read about this old guy who tod the media he wasnt looting but he needed depends.I was thinking about the people who were left behind

  6. Charlie Taylor Says:

DJ: Actually the AP writer who wrote the caption for one of the photos saw the ‘white’ people picking up groceries that were floating in the water. No word however on the other caption.

  7. Joel Says:

noncogito, yes it is a class issue, because I’m sure the rich black people are equally as comfortable as the rich white people just as the poor of both are equally hurt by this. What comes out is the undeniable fact that a huge percentage of the poor people happen to be black. So while it is a class issue, it seems that there is structural racism that exists in defining who is in which category, rich or poor. Anyone catch the HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher” last night? The panelists (unfortunately I don’t remember their names) brought up some very interesting thoughts on this.

DJ, I am consistently impressed with your compassion and altruism, not to mention your talent in both comics and flamewars. You have a lot of support.

  8. Shiva Says:

People are so eager to blame race or the government about what should have been done…but hindsight is 20/20. Sure a lot of things *could* have been done, but again, that’s in the past. People seem to be so concern about bitching about what *could* have been done that they don’t seem to care that there are people dying every minute and that thousands upon thousands of people are not without homes. DJ, props to joining the cause. You’re doing if for the people dammit and that’s what a lot of people seem to forget…this is about the PEOPLE there…not the governement, the PEOPLE!

  9. chadvavra Says:

“…undeniable fact that a huge percentage of the poor people happen to be black”

Happen to be? Jessie and Kayne might have issue with that.

I think, in this case, class and race are undeniably part of the lackluster initial response. It’s either that or mind-boggling criminal incompetence on the part of politicians and bureaucrats (both Dem and Rep).

The Red Cross has been ordered to stay out of New Orleans. Critical firefighting equipment is being left untouched. Chicago’s offer of manpower and equipment is “snubbed” by FEMA, according to the Mayor. FEMA “forgets” to tell the military to airdrop food and water to the survivors. Northern Command has been ready for days, just waiting for the President to give the orders. Feds delayed paperwork giving permission for National Guard to act. Louisiana begged for federal help on Sunday in a formal request, but the Bush administration says they didn’t know anything about problems until Wednesday.

Now the army is going in and describing American citizens in New Orleans as “the insurgency”.

  11. Stuart Robertson Says:

How can so many things have gone wrong, and continue to go wrong here?

On Wednesday morning a group of approximately 1,000 citizens pulling 500 boats headed to New Orleans with a police escort. The flotillia of trucks pulling boats stretched over FIVE miles. This citizen rescue group was organized by La. State Senator, Nick Gautreaux from Vermilion Parish. The group was comprised of experienced boaters, licensed fishermen and hunters, people who have spent their entire adult life and teenage years on the waterways of Louisiana.

When they arrived in New Orleans they were stopped by agents of the FEMA controlled La. Dept. of Wildlife & Fisheries.

A young DWF agent strolled through the boats and told approximately half of the citizens that their boats were too large because the water had dropped during the night and that they should turn around and go home.

They were pulling a large (24ft) shallow draft aluminum boat that can safely carry 12 passengers and had ramp access which would allow the elderly and infirm to have easier access to the boat. They then politely informed the DWF agent that the local and national media had consistently reported that the water level had risen during the night which contradicted his statement to them that the water was dropping and no boat over 16ft. in length would be allowed to participate in rescue operations.

They then specifically asked the DWF agent that they (and other citizens in the flotillia) be allowed to go to the hospitals and help evacuate the sick and the doctors and nurses stranded there. They offered to bring these people back to Lafayette, in our own vehicles, in order to ensure that they received proper and prompt medical care.

The DWF agent did not want to hear this and ordered them home — ALL FIVE HUNDRED BOATS.

  15. Jim Says:

I just went to the Red Cross site, as I thought doing disaster relief down their would be an awesome thing considering my schedule is more or less free until the second semester at which time I’ll start college courses, but upon getting to their website, it appears you first need to take ‘disaster relief’ courses at your local chapter, at which point you might not even be shipped down there. For that matter, it didn’t mention *how* to get down there, or even if there would be a place for you to lay your head once you got there. Not very practical if they’re looking for manpower.

I’d donate, but I’m flat broke as I haven’t been getting all that much business in my tech support gig lately.
