Xmen 3 Thoughts…

My thoughts on the Xmen movie after the jump…

Ok, so I took the kids to see Xmen3, if it wasnt for the kids wanting to see it so bad, I would have passed. This movie was marketed HEAVILY to kids, with ads galore on Nickelodean and the kids toon channels, which is fine right? Well, maybe, read on to where I have a slight problem with the movie.

Overall, It was a decent action flick, it holds well with the other two movies and it is what it is. The effects seemed a tad bit cheaper, but you couldn’t really tell unless you were looking really close. Looks like they spent a lot of money on the bridge moving scene and the final scene with Phoenix like fucking everything up… that was pretty cool.

Juggernaut was pretty cool, but they TOTALLY fucked up his character. There’s no two ways about it, Cain Marko IS Professor X’s Step Brother.. and he got his powers from the Gem, that gave him the body armor– but in this fucked up Xmen movie land, he’s just a mutant with the power to be really strong and unstoppable with momentum. FUCK THAT. Juggernaut isn’t really a mutant at all. He’s as much of a mutant as THOR is from getting his powers from the Hammer. ANYWAY… I can accept it. It’s hollywood, but DAMN, they could have done so much more with that they really missed the boat on that one and the HUGE connection to Professor X.

Frazier Beast…. Meh. He was actually ok, especially when he was gorilla slapping people around. Other than that, they really screwed up his continuity as well, never explained he was at the school before OR a founder of the school. Weird.

Just about every acting job by the mutant bad guys sucked. The throw away mutant characters were lame and felt just like “filler”.

But I was surprised at the language in the movie. There were a few “shits” at least one “bullshit” a couple “bitches” and one “Dickhead” — and THAT is where I sort of have a problem with the movie. Bad thing is, I asked my kids what their favorite scene is, they said when Juggernaut is brought halfway through the floor by Kitty Pryde, and he says “Don’t you know who I am, I’m the Juggernaut, BITCH!” — I was like,, WHA?? It was almost a joke, like that online voice over cartoon of the Juggernaut saying IM THE JUGGERNAUT BITCH! — then Kitty Pryde calls him a Dickhead. —- WHA???

The Xmen don’t need to swear. And by golly, if they’re going to, they have the WRONG characters swearing. You know what I mean? So, that alone sort of was a BAD writing job for whoever did this screenplay.

But hey, it’s not Oscar time…. this was a fun summer flick with alot of escapism. And the ending scene totally leads you to another movie. Probably… NEW MUTANTS? or since the Government thing with Mutants has been setup, TOTALLY you could have an X-FACTOR movie in the works. They’re making so much money, there is no way Holllywood won’t milk it for every penny more. Trust me on that. Even if they drive it into the ground.

OH! I’m looking forward to Superman and Pirates 2 though.. WHOA. Those movies look amazing. Saw the new new trailers in the theater, they’re awesome.

But what about SNAKES ON A PLANE?

  2. jay Says:

SNAKES ON A PLANE will be the blockbuster hit of the summer

  3. Laura Says:

I linked to your review of the movie in my own review. Check it out!

  4. LokiDC Says:

Snakes on a Plane is the only summer flick anyone will care about. Why? Because we got snakes on a motherfuckin’ plane!

  5. Zach Miller Says:

I thought the movie sucked. It was poorly written and directed. A lot of the shots just seemed like they were getting the easiest shots just so they could go home early. But what do you expect? It’s Brett Ratner, all his movies are mediocre.

Another thing they messed up (I think):

Now I’m not 100% on this, but didn’t Beast get the blue fur after trying to “cure” his mutation? Or did that kick off a secondary mutation? Because that scene with the kid and his hand turning normal, I thought, didn’t make sense. I mean, wasn’t his original power just enhanced strength, dexterity and agility? If anything, being around the kid should have made him clumsy.

Also, the guy playing Hank McCoy in X2 was much younger than Frasier, plus he didn’t have the fur yet. So, are we to assume that in the, what, months? year? following X2 and leading into this, he got the fur?

Other than that, I enjoyed it. It was obvious that Singer was no longer behind the wheel, but I still liked it.

Haven’t been reading the comics much, have you? They’ve used the ‘ultimate’ version of the Juggernaut, who IS a mutant, and has no relation to Xavier. I thought the language was about what you would expect from a pg-13 movie, and was in line with the characters that used it.

From what I understand the “don’t you know who I am” line is an intentional nod to the cartoon that’s been floating around youtube and googlevideo.

My own problem with Leech was when Beast puts his hand near him…his hair vaporizes, and as he pulls it back, all the hair uber quickly regrows. So, not only does he supress the mutant gene, but he changes all the physical mutations as well? And either Beast or Leech can correct those changes?

    meh.

I was disappointed too, overall, but:

Have you seen this? It’s been around on the internet for a few months now. I’m convinced that it inspired the Juggernaut’s dialogue for this movie.

  9. Logan Says:

Oh, wait, from the sound of it as I read your review again, you have seen it. Well, here’s this instead to make up for it:

I reckon the Xmen movie was filmed way before there was time to see the online video and know it would have a following or make a nod to it. Movies, scripts, etc are done well in advance of course, and there’s not much adlibbing in a scene setup like that. That’s my thought.

Overall, I can’t say the movie sucked… it was a comic book movie. It was better than Fantastic Four. THat was a Fantastic piece of crap.

  11. Coyoty Says:

The movie just didn’t seem finished to me. Everything was given cursory treatment, with only token explanations about what was going on. There should have been more with Angel and his father. Angel and other characters seemed to only be in the movie because they were obligated by the franchise to be there, and they were tossed aside as soon as they could be. The movie feels like the producers made it because they had to, not because they wanted to.

  12. kapoo Says:

I thought the movie was pretty poor compared to the previous two, but I’m sure will be great when compared to say…Snakes on a Plane. my real point in speaking up here is to register my amazement at the problems with language. This isn’t the first place I’ve seen people discuss this. My opinions? (1) it is a PG13 movie. You might expect some language. (2) Wolverine cuts up no-name mutant thugs like a f’in Canadian Ginsu, then stabd Jean Grey, and pretty graphically gets half of his flesh eaten away (not to menton all of the army guys she rips apart) and the big problem is with cuss words.
How do these two issues balnace out in our scociety?
“Cuss vs. Kill, on the next Oprah!!”

  13. DocNuke Says:

I thought the movie was okay, but I got a Fandango survey in my e-mail this morning and thought I’d take it. After asking my opinion of the movie, the survey started asking questions about the Mercedes SUV in the movie. I responded that I didn’t notice the SUV, then the survey points out the scene with the family trapped in their car on the Golden Gate. It goes on to say how Magneto didn’t throw their car off the bridge (he just locks the doors).

That scene in the film seemed, well, forced, and after doing the survey, I’m pretty convinced they put it in there just as product placement. The survey actually had the g’nads to ask me if I got the impression that the SUV was a good and safe car based on the appearance in the film! (I guess it’s perfectly safe against Mutant Masters of Magneticism…)

  14. Bob Says:

Magneto doesn’t lock the car, the women in the car locks it. Supposed to be funny. As in locking the car doors will keep ‘em safe.

    Meh movie was ok.

  15. Damien Says:

    Horryifying!

Mercedes wasn’t the only product placement, Leech was playing a Xbox 360, and dell computers feature as well. It wasn’t as obvious as “the island” but it’s also interesting to note that they’ve been doing it through the other x-men films as well. The mazda RX-8 was the star in 2 and which ever brand it was made sure their name was on the side of cyclops sunglasses. My biggest problem with the movie wasn’t that it fucked with all the comic mythology but that it even fucked with it’s own movie mythology. There is plently of inconsistancy throughout the films but this made a spectacle of it. very disappointing.

  16. The Castro Says:

Oakley is the sunglass brand that Cyclops had. I just liked how they killed him off in ten minutes. Most the actors in the third movies did poor jobs and whoever was editing the fight scene in the woods with wolverine did a bad job.

Also, did anyone else notice that his shirt had two holes in it, then was fixed when he talked to Jean/Pheonix? No blood, nothing. And thank god his pants stayed on in the end.

It was a poor movie, and I wish I could get a refund. Especially with that lame after the credits scene.

  17. Mike Says:

Bob, you’re wrong. The women went to lock the car, but magneto did it for her as a joke. Thus the suprised look on her face. Pay more attention next time.

  18. Melissa Says:

My god people. It’s a movie. If people didn’t have a problem with the language in the first movie, they shouldn’t have had a problem this time. And as for Nickolodean advertising, that’s their bull. They pulled that crap with other movies as well. While Brett Ratner did do a horrible job I admit, and the writing could have been better, [given they didn’t have much of a back story for Angel or Jean, as you see in the novelization] they did have a pretty good solid point, but the details were a sham. I still don’t get why they keep Anna Paquin around. Maybe if they do a fourth movie, they won’t muck up so badly.

I can tell you, there are differences in the novelization. I personally liked it better than the movie.

  19. DJ Says:

Novelization? don’t you mean COMIC BOOK? heh

  20. Kit Ranta Says:

i did enjoy the film, overall however i feel was there is so much depth in each charater and the films just simply skim over them. I suppose if you didnt read the comics you would have no real idea. But im such an xmen nut that i really get frustrated that there is almost no mention of the characters past, surely this would give the films far more depth and meaning. The movies needed to be made by true xmen fans ! x
