WORLDWIDE SUICIDE
You know, I probably need a seperate personal blog where I can rant on about things and post about things I’m passionate about.
Anyway, one thing I’m passionate about is PEARL JAM. And here’s the recording of the world premiere that played on 107 the END in Seattle. WORLDWIDE SUICIDE MP3 — the new album lands on May 2nd, with a tour to come. And again, the lyrics pretty much speak how I feel.
Some lyrics:
“Medals on a wooden mantle
Next to a handsome face
That the President took for granted
Writing checks that others pay
And in all the madness
Thought becomes numb and naive
So much to talk about
And nothing for us to say
It’s the same every day
And the wave won’t break
Tell you to pray while
the devil’s on his shoulder
Laying claims to the tainted soldier said
I’m not a quitting
The truth’s already out there”

WorldWide Suicide Lyrics
word by Vedder
I felt the earth on Monday
It moved beneath my feet
In the form of a morning paper
Laid out for me to see
Saw his face in a color picture
I recognized the name
Could not stop staring at the
Face I’d never see again
It’s a shame to awake in a world of pain
What does it mean when
the war is taking over?
It’s the same every day
I heard my name
Why can’t they say that
The world be left to hold her
The whole world
World over
It’s World Wide Suicide
The whole world
World over
It’s World Wide Suicide
Medals on a wooden mantle
Next to a handsome face
That the President took for granted
Writing checks that others pay
And in all the madness
Thought becomes numb and naive
So much to talk about
And nothing for us to say
It’s the same every day
And the wave won’t break
Tell you to pray while
the devil’s on his shoulder
Laying claims to the tainted soldier said
I’m not a quitting
The truth’s already out there
The whole world
World over
It’s World Wide Suicide
The whole world
World over
It’s World Wide Suicide
Looking in the eyes of the fallen
You’ve got to know there’s another
Another
Another
Another
Another
waaaaayyyyyyyyyyy
It’s a shame to awake in a world of pain
What does it mean when
the war is taking over
It’s the same every day
And the wave won’t break
Tell you to pray while
the devil’s on his shoulder
The whole world
World over
It’s World Wide Suicide
The whole world
World over
It’s World Wide Suicide
The whole world
World over
It’s World Wide Suicide
The whole world
World over
It’s World Wide Suiciiiiiiiiiide

Love pearl jam, but personally I feel that this is one album I would not touch. From the ones I know, men and women of the United States Armed Forces do not consider their efforts in vain quite like our media and a large percentage of our citizens do.

If you love Pearl Jam– you’d have to pick up the album! — Now, I know some guys who have lost limbs over there, and are pretty jaded about the government right now— thats the beauty of living in the USA though, everyone can have their own opinions.
I don’t really consider their actions if vain, I hope it makes some sort of difference, but I can see the broader view, that we’re probably doing more harm than good and creating more Osamas and AlQaeda ilk along the way. There definitly is another way.
One things for sure– the album will rock.

You are correct, gotta love freedom of speech. Which brings me to the comic. I love it. Love the daily updates, love the Kroeger bashing. The comic is 10 times better ever since Bob left.
Just throwing that out there in case I came off as a Ron Fitzpatrick. He deserves a good “Spak!”ing.

Nothing against Pearl Jam (hell, I support this song), but I have officially hated the band for years after listening to my local Clear Channel-controlled rock station play the same 5 singles over and over on, and then after each one, hearing the DJ scream “THE MIIGGHTTTYYY PEEEARRRLLL JAAAAMMMM”, as if he thinks he’s clever by screaming that same line over and over again.
This is why I rarely ever listen to regular radio now: except for NPR and KPacifica, about every radio station in my area is controlled by Clear Channel or Infinity Broadcasting. Reminds me of this excerpt from 311’s “Solar Flare”
…porno shows, MTV ho’s,
and on the radio
it’s the same fuckin’ song
that’s just the way it goes…

Thats why you need to stop listening to your radio– or get sattelite radio.
March 5th, 2006 at 12:59 pm
Oh yes. Love listening to the same terrestrial radio over and over. 94.3 The X, New ROCK!, and guess what it’s like Pearl Jam, Nickelback, Creed, ACDC, and Van Halen songs that are 5-10 years old.
I can’t reason getting satellite radio in my fricken 92 taurus.

I hate money for the same reason Sparkle. My job makes me work for it.
DJ, you rock. That radio station saying they aren’t supposed to have it but are playing it every 107 minutes doesn’t rock, doesn’t rock at all.

Love pearl jam, very political. As a Irish Canadian, love to hear it. Good For them stop killing kids!

even though his lyricism is awkward, thank god vedder says there is another way. we are immersed in spectacle culture. i was in hungary and met people who were drafted. one lost his brother. he said, “i don’t know why my brother had to die for a war that the united states is fighting.” we are all unhappy and alienated. we can see we have free speech, but it is just a form of control. people were arrested in new york at the anti-bush protests in new york. my friend’s mom was crossing the street and put into cuffs. i lost a friend in the world trade center crash. and for bush to come here and put “remember september 11th” in the background for his speech… it really hurts me. and kerry wouldn’t have been any better. we would still be in iraq. big business would still be destroyed the environment. we would still be promoting globalization. your friend’s shirt from the gap - one arm would be sewn on in sri lanka and the other one by slave labor workers in china. we are just spectators. we are just watching it all happen on our interface. i don’t think vedder’s lyrics are very profound, but at least he is saying something. everyone needs to try to say something. everyone needs to revolutionize their every day lives. that is the only hope we have. if you are a true patriot, you’ll start revolutionizing your everyday life and realizing that we are products of a controlling spectacle culture.

I am so excited to hear Pearl Jam again! Of course they are going to address the war,I am surprised it took this long-I expected them to be one of the first.Pearl Jam has always been willing to address issues that others wouldn’t even touch at the time (Jeremy 1991)-now look how aware society is about issues regarding school violence. For Pearl Jam to now address the problems that we have gotten ourselves into (because we are greedy & just have to have our $7 t-shirt from Walmart) is not unpatriotic, it is realistic. In the past, Pearl Jam has been both thought provoking and enjoyable to listen to and I am personally looking forward to some much needed reality in rock..glad their back!!!
March 15th, 2006 at 11:01 am
Pearl Jam hasnt just started addressing the war, 2 years ago at their concerts they were saying the same thing, even during rock the vote! I dont neccessarily agree with everything they say, but at the concerts its hard not to just go along with it with everyone around you screaming and cheering Eddie on!
March 15th, 2006 at 9:13 pm
of course pearl jam is going to address the war they are truthful and have always been that way, mtv unplugged 1992 pro choice? they are the most talented band around and have been constantly for 14 years eddie is a pure genious a little nutty but who cares he makes a difference he is not afraid to tell the truth and why should he be he always has if you dont like their songs don’t buy them, but don’t judge people on their opinions they belong to them all i can say is thank goodness pearl jam has another album out and world wide suicide is excellent.

It is less a breath of fresh air and more a tornado of the stuff when i hear the thoughts of Ed Vedder. It is few and far between that we get to hear the thoughts of those whom we’ve given the floor. let it ring, let it rock…total support from my corner!

I totally dig the music to wws, the song rocks! that said… i wish the lyrics weren’t so bush blamming. bush has been a real dolt in several areas, but to maintain an ideology that this f-d up world is his fault is simply retarded. terrorism isn’t bush’ fault it is something that has been part of societies for centuries. It is time to end it if we are going to progress as humans and they only way to rid this kind of behaviour from society is to eradicate those responsible for planning and carrying out the acts. making nice-nice will never work. the world leaders need to sit down and DEAL with it once and for all. i put the majority of the mess in iraq squarely on the UN. I wish eddie would focus some rage over there… if they would pull up their pants and stop wetting them everytime there is conflict in the world maybe we could solve this shiz. i’m really tired of the US having to carry the weight. i will say that the song invites some dialog~ peace.

VOTE FOR EDDIE VEDDER IN 08
March 17th, 2006 at 8:35 pm
At last! A new Album and single from the undisputed kings of Grunge. Hallelujah! A band not afraid of standing up to the fundamentalist christian Neo-conservatives that insist on spreading their morally corrupt idealism over the face of the planet. Wake up United States! What are you doing to the world? If only more influential bands took a stance like this we might actually be able to educate the next generation. Some slightly misinformed opinions on this site, those of you that think this war is “just” need to look into some of the facts more closely. Its a shame more contemporary bands dont share such a political stance, and a shame more kids arent interested in world politics and history.
Keep on rockin in the free world!
Looking forward to the new album and hopefully a European tour!
March 17th, 2006 at 8:36 pm
Vote for what world leader?
Eddie is a rich capitalist like anybody else with a brain and the motivation to get their ass out of bed in the morning and go to work. America the beautiful!
w/o it he’d peeling gum off the street and ranting in grimey urine soaked pubs like they do in eastern europe, instead of living the phat life of a rock legend and pointing fingers at others. musicians are musicians, politicians are politicians. I work with both, and its an amazing study on how platform can become power; warranted and otherwise. There will always be sheep to follow or in some cases cows that walk up to the hammer b/c some jack-ass tells them to… great books and challenging friends expand minds. (iron sharpens iron) this leads to intelligent debates which bring about change. peace.
PS- Audioslave totally rocks and keeps it in perspective!
March 17th, 2006 at 8:43 pm
You don’t know much about Vedder then… Vedder still drives the same 1990 Toyota truck around Seattle that he bought when he was working at a service station in San Diego
Sure he’s rich.. but he’s not let the money go to his head, that’s for sure. Pearl Jam is a responsible band, and will be around a long, long time. Buckle up, we’re about to see their media “comeback” but long after this HYPE storm fades, PJ will still be going strong until they have no more songs to sing… which isn’t likely.
March 18th, 2006 at 8:58 am
driving a 16 year old vehicle around seatown when you can afford to be rolling in something a little more enviromentally friendly doesn’t sound virtuous to me. as i’ve said before, the band rocks, the song smokes musically. I bought it as soon as it hit itunes. i just think the lyrical blame game is lame… will i buy the record? not sure, if its more of the same probably not… peace.
March 20th, 2006 at 2:32 am
WOW……just enjoy the music, donate money to your favorite charity, judge not, and love our country. Peace and Love to you all! War really does not make anyone happy. Politial? that is why we love Pearl Jam! They open my mind. He really drives a 1990 Toyota ? Wow they last forever! I should go get one!
March 20th, 2006 at 12:31 pm
Pearl Jam is perhaps the only band that is at the same time mainstream and alternative. With the difference to all others they actualy have something to say. Some say their lyrics are not profound and that’s the beauty of them. You don’t have to start a philosophy to adress problems like war or pollution. Just simple raw words and that’s it! They were playing here in Slovenia (my home country) back in 2000 and they were the first American band that took the time to learn something about us and actualy knew where they were playing. I loved every bit of that concert and I realy hope I can see (hear) them live again.
March 21st, 2006 at 12:33 am
I LIKE THAT! Now I need to learn abour Slovenia. I think I will visit on earth GOOGLE to feed my curiousity! Go Pearl Jam!

Hi All!
Pearl Jam was one of my favourite bands till I heard Riotact.
I can’t belive how can make a band an album like riot act if it has like ten vs or vitalogy or what else (my favourite).
I’m looking forward and I’m very inrtested in the new album, but I’ve dowload it this World Wide Suicide, and it seems like a punk song from a low category punk band. So after this I don’t give any chance for the new album and unfortuntely for the band as well. I know that they want to do something new, because this is a process that we could enjoy from the album “No code”, but the style of their music has absolutely changed.
I think if this would be the first time when I hear pearl jam for example with this song “World Wide Suicide”, I’m sure I wouldn’t like them.
But I’m very tolerant with this band, and Vitalogy will be one of my favourites albums ever.
What do you think about this? I’m really dissapionted.

What do I think about it? I think you’re entitled to your opinion, but WORLDWIDE SUICIDE ROCKS!!!! And the new album is getting all sorts of praise and attention.
I also think you’re on crack if you thought RiotAct sucked. You’re no Pearl Jam fan, that’s for sure. You’re probably just one of those Johnny Come Latelys who bought up a Flannel when it was HIP and cool to wear one..
March 24th, 2006 at 3:54 am
HI DJ!
Sorry I don’t know what is Johnny Come Lately….. Maybe it’s some kind of saying where you from, but I don’t know it.
I don’t want to prove you if I pearl jam fan or not, I know PJ from the begginig. I think most of people like new albums of PJ only because they know that how good band was Pearl Jam earlier.
Maybe their lyrics are more serious than earlier, but their music getting worst.
Sorry, if I hurt here anobody, I don’t want to I’m just very intrested in your opinion.
Have a good day

IM KIDDING…
RIOTACT WAS A GREAT CD…. I AM MINE. IS MY FAVORITE SONG…
THEY HAVE GROWN SO MUCH AS MUSICIANS…..THE NEWER STUFF IS JUST A SIGN OF GROWTH…..

March 30th, 2006 at 11:59 am
Pearl Jam rocks!! WorldWide SUICIDE Rocks!.Pearl Jams best songs are ones not played on the radio, Sleight OF Hand,You Are and Immortality the list is Great.Eddie Vedder’s lyrics put him in a class with great musicans such as Bob Dillion,Red Hot Chili peppers,Bob Marley,Jim Morrison and the longivity of a group like the stones.I think the new album may top no code as my fav.
March 31st, 2006 at 1:09 pm
JK-
nice try. tell that to a kurd or another iraqi. if the the UN would have held up their end and actually provided a punitive alternative instead years of dodging and lining their pockets via oil for food, tens of thousands of lives may have been spared. your train of thought is so stunted it frightens me. the only straw in this argument is the straw you are smoking in your peace pipe.
April 10th, 2006 at 11:19 am
Nice try b-dog to blame UN. Who needs that Iraqi oil so much? UN maybe? Just see the numbers:
Total energy consumption in 2004: USA-67,2%, Europe-8,1%, Asia Pacific-24,6.
Total electricity consumption in 2004: USA-60,5%, Europe-7,9%, Asia Pacific-31,6.
Natural gas/fuel oil consumption in 2004: USA-87,1%, Europe-8,9%, Asia Pacific-4,0.
If USA (government) cares so much for those Kurds in Iraqi why don’t they go save thousands of lives in Darfur (Sudan) or in so many other places around the world where thousands of people are dying. The answer is simple: there’s no oil. And tell me about the Kyoto agreement and other enviromental agreements that USA (government) doesn’t wannna be part of. Why?
