Why a monthly book?
Thanks to the folks out there who’ve mentioned the new book on their blogs or whatnot. You rock. — It was also mentioned on the Nightgig podcast show, you can download that HERE. — One of the guys, Scott, got to ask the WHY questions and play Devil’s Advocate about the book.
So, I thought I’d answer some of those questions to the best of my ability more about what the book is and will be for anyone out there who might be confused.
#1 How will my daily fill up the monthly comic??? Well, I do 5 strips a week, (usually in full color), so that’s around 20 or more strips per book. One strip per page, nice and big in high resolution. So yeah, the MEAT of the book is the colored dailies. No doubt, and it fills itself up automatically… ALMOST….
#2 What else is in it? Well, the first issue has a little backup thing I did in full color, plus a neat letters page you can write into and get published in if you like– and I’m going to do editorial type things in each issue as well.
#3 For at least issue #1, I will draw in ink on the inside of every cover. What will I draw? Well it won’t be a stick figure or something lame. I’m setting aside a good bit of my time to make each book as unique as possible– I’d even like to hide things in certain issues and see if anyone finds them— notations, puzzles… just for shitss and giggles.
#4 It is about the price of hopping in your car and going to a shop or bookrack and buying a copy of something. In my experience, even though people like those BIG collections, it’s also harder for people to part with 14-20 bucks than it is to spend 4 bucks to try it something new out.
Let’s take a look at the future of the issues…. THE FUTURE, CONAN???
That’s issue one. For future issues I’d like to do longer backup stories. Maybe pop in a nifty origin comic, or little adventure with a featured character.
I won’t lie. I’m mostly doing this for me. For one, I hate the thought of the monthly comic book dying out. Let alone the independent comic book. At the end of the year I want to be able to look at a little place on my wall for all 12 covers and all the fun crap I put out that year. And since I’m not using the Direct Market comic book system, I can do this without losing money or having much upfront money at all. It’s a win win for me and people who want to support my bullcrap.
Will people buy it? Well, already many have, and I thank you kindly! Will they buy issue 2? Who knows… if they don’t next month, maybe in a few months they’ll want to collect em all… — I’m really just going with the flow on this whole thing, who knows where it’ll take us next.
Frankly, I don’t have anyone to bounce my crazy ideas off these days one on one. (I do most of it in the Club forum as a matter of fact) — I could seriously be wasting my time that could be better spent elsewhere. I guess we’ll just have to sit here and wait it out and see.
OH! In one last development… all the comics will come with a comic bag and backboard as well.

Hmm.. I’d like to have the first batch out by then, it all depends on how fast the printer can get my first run to me. Also, it probably depends where you are in the country.
