strip: The Llama went south…

Llama goes south

Webcomics Telethon

We’ll be partcipating in the Webcomics Telethon to raise money for the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Sept 13th and 14th you can tune in to their website to see some great comics from various webcomic creators, I’m sure the best of the best will be there. 100% of the donations and sponsor spots go to the Red Cross. Even if you don’t donate, still go check out all the great comics, and support the sponsor links of their site, (looks like they’ll be doing ad spots there as well) — I won’t let you forget about it either, I’ll remind everyone here everday until the telethon is done. Let’s see what we in the webcomics community can raise toward this effort.

LET’S DO THIS THANG!!!!

    Oh my god….

That’s terrible and funny at the same time!

  2. MaGog Says:

When did the USA become a third world country that needed its citizens to raise money for relief? I dont read the news or anything, so I dont know the situation, but this makes your government look pretty crappy if it doesn’t have the funds to help their own people, but has the funds to invade other countries.

Great comic by the way, but I just thought I had to comment on this telethon thing. Keep up the good work.

  3. Sandra Says:

Maybe if the USA didn’t spend $(omgabignumber) bombing other countries, it would have enough money to improve the quality of life for it’s own citizens.

  4. DJ Says:

Wow…. I can’t believe I’m reading criticism about the US government relating to a Hurricane relief telethon here. So let me break it down for you:

#1, there will be billions of our own tax dollars spent for hurricane relief. While the US certainly shouldn’t go around bombing things, I imagine they have seperate budgets for those things…. the US has FEMA to deal with tragic events. And this has impacted hundreds of thousands of people here.

#2- We’re not talking about “quality of life” here…. An ENTIRE US METROPOLIS is wiped out, and not just ONE city, we’re talking several here through the gulf coast… it’s BAD.

Anyway– on a day where people are being turned away from setup shelters because there is just no more room… on a day where people are still dying, stranded alone somewhere with no way to get help…. The last thing I want to hear is about the war in Iraq, politics, or whatever…. please leave all politics aside. Help out if you can.

And that is coming from ME. One of the most heartless bastards of all time, who generally HATES the leadership of this country.

  5. Murch Says:

Who gives a flying fuck how much the government is doing? Does that really make a goddamn bit of difference? Thousands dead, 80% or more of New Orleans is UNDER WATER, probably lost forever, and you people are bitching about the government, saying that they should do it all? Are you fucking kidding me? You guys are some humanitarian mother fuckers, you know that?

  6. Murch Says:

Got so worked up I didn’t even say anything about the Telethon. That’s a badass idea, DJ. Props to all the guys who will be taking part, it’s good to see that in times of hardship there’s people who will always step up and DO something about it. Hopefully I’ll have enough money left after getting raped at the gas pump so I can make my FORTY MILE ROUND TRIP commute to work in a car that gets TWENTY MPG, yep, 2 gallons a day. It is going to cost me nearly $7 a day just to get to work–*ahem* Hopefully I’ll have some cash to donate.

  7. DJ Says:

Yeah, I got a little worked up too…. Anyways, this has nothing to do with politics, and everything to do with wanting to help. If it’s the citizens like myself helping raise funds, so be it……doesn’t mean anyone shouldn’t help.

I challenge all of you to at least make a 10-20 dollar donation.

  8. Murch Says:

I’m going to a car show/festival this weekend, and we’re going to be setting up a donation box for cash, and another one for clothes and stuff. So if anyone happens to live around Harrison, Arkansas, or likes Datsun/Nissan Z series cars enough to make the drive for a badass show, come, donate, we’d appreciate it greatly.

  9. teknik Says:

DJ, it’s a nice sentiment, and I agree, a little goes a long way. However to shitheads like these, the almighty buck supercedes their responsibility to the rest of the human race.

People make me sick. I wouldn’t cross the street to piss on you fucks if you were on fire. Although I might, just to piss on you.

  10. too lazy to think of a name Says Says:

I get paid today, and I’m planning on donating to my disaster relief charity of choice. I’m not going to just sit back and sneer and tell the government to do everything.

Frankly, this is a lot bigger than the government can handle. We’re talking huge swaths the Gulf coast just wiped out, complete anarchy in a major U.S. city that’s underwater. My few measely bucks won’t help much, but if everyone in the U.S. donated 5, 10, 20 bucks it’d go a long way towards getting relief to the citizens who need it.

I can’t even imagine what it’s going to take to rebuild.

PS: Read the damn news if you don’t know what’s going on!

  11. Brandon J. Carr Says:

I’ll be contributing at least one strip to the webathon, hopefully more if I have time. There’s not a lot I can do financially (especially when a tank of gas is almost $40) so if I can slap down some cartoony lines to encourage other people, at least I’ll have done a little.

  12. Inufan Says:

Magog, Sandra, someone needs to break thier king-sized foot off in your collective ass. The telethon is a good thing, DJ. Is it going to be pay-pal or what?

  13. Inufan Says:

The thing that really pisses me off is that when the rest of the country is coming together to help, the oil companies are gouging the shit out of us. Stop trying to make money off of this and HELP, you greedy rat bastards!

  14. Eri Says:

There is no point… NO POINT AT ALL… in sitting there and bitching about the government or even the oil companies. The comments and complaints that you make here on this page are not going to make any difference in that.

Worry about yourself. Go out and give all the help that you can, personally. Think about the fact that fellow human beings are suffering, and do what you can to make that suffering stop.

If you’re really that pissed off about the government and the oil companies, write them a letter. Go protest in person. Something. Don’t just sit here and bitch about it.

I really wonder how many of the people who are complaining about this have actually donated money themselves. Or are you all just sitting around on your asses, getting mad at everyone else who isn’t helping?

It’s just so fucking petty to point fingers at a time like this. Grow up.

  15. MaGog Says:

That’s the problem really, is that everyone thinks that everything can be solved by money. Do you really think that people are not willing to help the stranded survivors just because they haven’t got paid? Don’t you realise that the main reason these problems have occured is because of money in the first place?

Just because I criticise your government you get all offended like I am criticising you personally. You are all patriotic sheep, that believe everything that you do is good and that the reason your country is in such a state is because of everyone else but yourselves.

Going off subject a bit really, but it’s just shocking to see that 1000’s of people are dying, just because the people in charge haven’t given the nod yet for relief to be sent. I doubt it has anything to do with the fact that the majority of the population is black either….

  16. Eri Says:

Oh! And to Murch. The Red Cross made a statement yesterday about material donations, like food and clothing. They said that donations of actual physical things are a logistical nightmare, that actually bog them down and make it harder for them to do their work, and so they encourage everyone to only make monetary donations.

  17. Eri Says:

And to respond to that last comment about patriotic sheep…

I am a proud Canadian, and if you actually ask me (this is not trying to start fights, just giving perspective), I hate the fucking US Government. I just think now is a shitty time to feed that hate. Hate is NOT what anyone needs in a time of crisis.

  18. Murch Says:

Hey MaGog, patriotic sheep, my ass. In fact, I don’t think we have a single person who would call themselves “Patriotic” in regards to our government that’s a regular on the forums.

I agree that it’s fucking stupid that they haven’t given the nod yet to send the money, but our point wasn’t that the government is doing a good job. The point was that who gives a fuck what the government is doing? We’re not trying to help the government, you jackass, we’re trying to garner support for our FELLOW HUMANS who are in the middle of a huge fucking disaster.

And, I’m sorry, but I don’t really understand how money caused a Hurricane to fuck up a major city. Did we not pay it off or something to send it in the other direction?

  19. MaGog Says:

I don’t hate the US government, i’m just making an observation. The only reason to hate something, is if you fear it and I don’t fear anything, so I have no reason to hate.

  20. Murch Says:

Oh, and Eri, thanks for the heads up on the clothing donations and stuff. I’m sure we can find someone other than the Red Cross who maybe specializes in non-monetary stuff. I think some of the members of our club have family/friends down there as well, so I’m sure we’ll be able to work something out.

Don’t fear anything, eh? Impressive. Hey guys, lookie here, we’ve got the bravest person to ever exist chilling on this site. Awesome.

  21. MaGog Says:

HAHA I knew that was going to be the response. Money is the reason that it is taking so long for relief to be sent, not the cause of the hurricane. Actually, money could be blamed for the cause of all problems actually, because it was probably the amount of pollution that the US creates that is making the freak weather.

But hey, what goes around comes around I suppose. You fuck with nature and nature will fuck with you. I’m just waiting for the next stage which will be earthquakes. No amount of money will be able to save people from shit like that.

  22. DJ Says:

    Ugh– yeah, It’s ALL america’s fault… wow.

    GEEZ!!!

Money CAN and WILL help out a lot– to buy supplies, and to help staff shelters, build shelters, etc… the Red Cross needs it– not the US govt.

  23. zanbowser Says:

to say that hate is directly proportional to fear is foolish. fear has little to do with real hatred. for instance, i fear no man yet have intense hatred for those who would harm women or children… i fear no government (as an anarchist, hate and wonder supplants fear), yet i hate the concept of governance which comes from outside one’s self (mostly abhorrance as it’s unnecessary for those who are capable of governing themselves).

all of that really dies on the tongue though, knowing that - despite their poor choice of living spaces; Sam Kinison would’ve told them to move the f**k out of there - there are people suffering in the areas affected by the hurricane. would that my company would have sent me with the relief effort, just as i’d gone to help during 9/11, FOR FREE. i would gladly donate my time and risk my own life and limb to assist, were i able. sadly, my sense of self-preservation make me concerned for my job security (and therefore my livelihood), else i’d say “damn the torpedoes” and go. petitioned them again today to send a group of us to help (especially the few here who have Guard, Navy, or CG/Dockyard experience); we’ll see what happens. in the meantime, i’ve donated directly from my pay to our office American Red Cross accumulation.

bravo to you, DJ, for continuing to produce comedy even in times of tragedy.

  24. schpat Says:

    Hey guys,

The comic-a-thon sounds cool. Raising money for those less fortunate than yourself is admirable in any circumstances. Four dollars a gallon for gas that’s not too bad! Here in South Africa we’ve been paying about R5.50 a litre, wich is about $0.80, for about four months now. It’s hectic!

    C’mon people, now
    smile on your brother,
    ev’ry-body get together,
try to love one another right now.

  25. zanbowser Says:

    amen, schpat

    (joins in the chorus)

  26. teknik Says:

Jesus Magog.. Maybe if you concentrate on making one valid point instead of just flinging shit in every direction you might generate a little more respect for yourself..

Methinks your blind, unreasoning defiance against all things American is the reason you’re clouding this fine website with your filth.

We’re trying to state simply that other human beings require our help. I’m sure it’s easy to feel superior and condescending sitting in your dry undamaged home, but I bet your tune would change instantly if you had someone you loved in New Orleans right now.

You’ll have to answer a question for me.. IS ignorance bliss? Because if so you must be the most blissful sack of rhino shit on this entire planet right now.

    Please sterilize yourself. Thanks.

  27. Eri Says:

Wow! You mean to tell me that hurricanes didn’t exist before pollution? How about that. Is rain a by-product of polution? How about wind?

Wow, mama nature’s got nothing on the pollution produced by the U.S.!

  28. teknik Says:

Eri, we’re both wasting our breath. Clearly this moron lacks the ability to debate a point.. Or make one for that matter…

  29. too lazy to think of a name Says:

    *slams head against the desk*

Oh boy, okay… a hurricane is not “freak weather”… It’s a natural weather pattern created by a change in pressure over the ocean. It happens all the time, really, and not just hurricanes. There’s tornados, earthquakes, floods… heck, I remember the time when a volcano blew up near me. Fun times, fun times. These are all just a part of nature, that have been going on since before humans, let alone money, even existed.

That said, there was an natural “buffer zone” that was plowed through for developments that could have softened this. I’m hoping that area gets turned into a park.

No, money won’t solve all the problems in New Orleans, but it will help organizations get immediate relief to the homeless, the injured, the dying, and those who still have a chance to live. I have no qualms about giving what I can for this. If that makes me a “patriotic sheep” then so be it. But I’m not doing this for the government, I’m doing it for the people who need it.

I’m not begruding anyone who cannot, or even will not, donate to the Red Cross, et al, but why the hell are you criticizing those of us who are doing so?? What, specifically, do you want?

  30. Jeege Says:

Bush began the day at the White House where he expressed unhappiness with the efforts so far to provide food and water to hurricane victims and to stop looting and lawlessness in New Orleans. “The results are not acceptable,” said Bush, who rarely admits failure. (yahoo.com)

At least he was willing to admit his mistake. Furthermore, magog, I don’t care if you are playing the devil’s advocate or if you really are as dumb as you sound here today. Everything that you have said, is in terrible, awful and poorly timed taste. How dare you, how dare any of us get all about politics in a time like this. New Orleans is gone! New Orleans, ok? That is a major metro city filled with a deep southern history and some of the kindest people Ive met. Let’s concentrate on helping them out in a time of need and not on our own ill agendas.

DJ, I’ll keep reading and give what I have when I have it. Thank you so much for doing your part, all of you.

This patriotic sheep is signing off of this all too heated conversation.

  31. teknik Says:

    /applauds

  32. Cracka Keith Says:

    MaGog,

People like you make people like me turn into a complete asshole. You’re a real motherfucker, that’s the truth.
Mother Nature can be quite harsh, sometimes she can be a total bitch. Those poor people in New Orleans need our help, what if your trailer got carried away in a flood? You’d need a helping hand. You’re a real prick, quit posting silly shit. This is a comic, not no fucking CNN or Fox f’n news chatroom.

  33. Krishna Says:

DJ, I’ll be contributing a strip to the webcomictelethon. Thanks for the heads-up!

  34. Katie Says:

I don’t have a job so I can’t send any money, but I’m donating my time to the local Red Cross. They need help locally so that they can send members to New Orleans for the big effort. If you can’t afford your twenty like me this is the next best thing.

  35. DJ Says:

Right on, Katie. Heck, even if you have no time to volunteer, they still could use donated blood, etc…. I’m sure a good amount of the blood supply has been messed up over this too…. so anyone that can, can give blood too.

  36. Eri Says:

Sometimes I get really frustrated that they won’t take my blood, all because of my piercings and tattoos.

  37. noncogito42 Says:

What the fucking hell? People are dying thousands are homeless and have lost their jobs.I cant really afford much but am also going to volunteer at one of the shelters here in austin where alot of people are coming for my commuinty service hours instead of going to my usual place (where i just have to show up and they say ive been there for 9 hrs)

  38. Inufan Says:

I’m donating half my paycheck to help out. Its only 50 or 60 bucks, but I figure they need it more than I do. I saw pictures of where I used to live in Biloxi, Mississippi. It’s GONE. Nothing is left. My dad was stationed at the airforce base there, and it will most likely not come back in operation. The commisary is almost completly under water, and the base exchange is just not there anymore. I was there for hurrcane George a few years ago, and it was bad. We had no running water, electricity, nothing, for about 2 months. But this is about ten times worse. I just feel I owe it to the Red Cross to do this, because they helped me and my family, ya know?

  39. Fargoth Says:

This comic is really gay. And remember, it doesn’t mention ANYTHING about the hurricane. There’s no reason to talk about it.

  40. Keith Says:

I suppose that large banner at the bottom of the comic has absolutly nothing at all to to with the disaster. The hurricane disaster has nothing at all to do with that banner (which is part of the comic), even though it clearly states the word hurricane twice. Oh and tha blog (which is also part of the comic) has absoltly nothing to do with the hurricane relief disaster. I think someone got a little wrapped up in the whole “gay” theme of the latest comic to notice these minor details.

P.s. Im just in a pissed off mood and am sending random and pointless hate anywhere and everywhere i cant find, dont listen to me.

  41. DJ Says:

Well, on Sept 13th or 14th you can login to see an actual comic about the Hurricane— I was just announcing I would be involved in this endeavor.

Wow– so many people looking to take a steaming crap on a good cause. Way to go, retards!

  42. livinginthefridge Says:

The ironic thing about this here interweb-a-tron thingie is that, out of the rich and outright overflowing shitpot of idiots and asshats in the real world that made you want to spend most of your time online, at least 1 out of 10 end up dripping their way near a computer, and then online… >:| I’m looking at you MaGog. Well, maybe it’s justification to go outdoors and such.

Oh, and I applaud your cause DJ, truly…but no donations or anything from me, I’m still looking at a nearly $2000 bill for my hospital stay from around a month ago. So. Yeah. Moths in my pockets and so forth. :(

  43. eddy Says:

the $2000 bill sounds harsh, how do you americans manage it? free health care woot ^_^ it rocks to be british

dont start slagging me off now for saying something happy but i dont think we all need to sit on a computer and complain at anyone and everyone who trys to make people not think of the hurricane and make people cheer up

  44. MaGog Says:

Blimey, not much room for opinion in this place. If death was not seen as a bad thing, then there would be no problem. But, hey, that’s crazy talk I hear you say, surely death and pain are bad things, but if you learn to see the good in everything, you see past the surface and see the real reason.

If you are all so blind to see that the US government is so corrupt you wouldn’t believe it if they slapped you in the face, then that’s your problem not mine. Considering how long it has taken for aid to reach the survivors, it makes you wonder what the goverments motives are.

Anyway, great website and I’m sorry for having an opinion so different from everyone else here, but if everyone in the world ageed with each other, it would be a very boring place.

By the way, I work a 50+ hour week, so I’m probably outside more that you livinginthefridge.

  45. MaGog Says:

Problems are not solved my mearly fixing the problem, but fixing the reason why the problem happened.

  46. DJ Says:

I’m all for other opinions man— but in this case, your’s doesn’t help the topic at all. The topic wasn’t about who didn’t help or why aid wasn’t given… if you’re following the situation closely, there are SEVERAL reasons for that….

The topic was HELPING and donating what you could. Your attitude came off like, hey, screw these people because the Government should have helped them.– This goes to show you that you can’t always rely on federal aid…. sometimes the people have to take care of each other.

    Like now!

  47. Rasputin Says:

    You know what?

Dreamhost is matching donations from the internal server pages we use to set up our sites.

I donated $200 and they matched it.

That’s another $400 for the cause.

What’ve YOU done, today, people? Quit your bitching and help out any way you can.

    Deej - you the man.
