So, I’ll be going to San Diego, flying out on the 19th and staying until the 21st. I’m one of 50 semi-finalists who gets to go pitch to Platinum Studios and a group of judges. I’ll likely be checking out Comicon too, so if you’d like to schedule a fist fight with me or some altercation, do e-mail me. ;) hah… Here’s some background about this thing.

Some of you may remember back when I posted about this thing called the Comic Book Challenge, put on by Platinum Studios and the NBC office in San Diego. Actually, it drew a lot of healthy skepticism in the webcomic circles when I posted about it on Comixpedia. — Actually, Joey Manley and Scott Kurtz kissed and made out, i mean made up, long enough to do a full podcast interview with the head guy there where they really grilled him about contracts, etc. They even transcribed it into text, which was faster for me to get through last night. LINK
Anyway, before I had even broke the news about this to the webcomic crowd, I had already submitted an idea I was developing a couple years back that I had planned to maybe launch as a webcomic, (because webcomics are where it’s at!) — After this thing was pushed heavily nationwide, I guess they received a LANDSLIDE of last minute submissions. Most likely over 10,000 and from what I was told, many came in on the last day. — So, to even be picked in a top 50 is something I suppose.

Now what? Well, I’ll be out there on the 20th doing the in person pitch. (fro or no fro? Hmm….) then they decide the top 3, and then it goes to a public vote or something online, etc opening up the polls that night and running all through the comicon weekend. If I’m picked in the top 3, the morning of the 21st I’d be on some NBC morning show out there I guess telling the world the pitch and to vote for my idea. (maybe I should just look at the camera and point to my fro???) heh.

The winner signs a deal with Platinum to have their project published in March of 2007 and released at a major convention next year, and beyond that, the opportunity to have their project pitched or optioned to the myriad of connections that Platinum has.

OK… So, just so all of you know, I’m a big boy. I don’t need lectured or warned about selling off my rights. I created this side project specifically for this sort of purpose, and I’ll ride the wave out whatever the outcome is. I’ve been around this comic book world for quite awhile (1994) and I’ve seen people lose their asses, get ripped off, and I’ve seen people not even have a project completed , actually only have one or two pages of work and sell it off and become almost millionaires and their projects never heard from again. — Seriously, who better to win this thing than a straight shooter like me? — Plus, I have confidence in the project I’m pitching. BTW: CLUB MEMBERS can see what project I’ll be pitching.

Anyways, even if I don’t get picked, the silver lining is, I’ll get to roam around comicon for 2 days and meet up with a bunch of creators and friends who will be there…

Wish me luck!

(update I think I booked a room and flight through ORBITZ ok– I’ll let every know if I need a floor to crash on)

    Hey dude,
Could you get rid of the animated bookmark/address bar icon? I don’t mind if you guys have an icon, but it’s pretty annoying to have a little red box squirming constantly in my bookmarks bar while I’m surfing the web.

I’m not *trying* to be an ass about this. Is there at least a way to disable it client-side without blocking all images from your site?

  5. Jack Says:

Awesome indeed. I suggest keeping the fro.

  6. Coyoty Says:

Fredd, you could just close or reduce your bookmarks bar until you actually need it. That will give you more screen space, too.

  7. Dan Walton Says:

Good luck man! We’ll all be rooting for you. :)

    Keep the ‘fro!
