More on Comic Book Challenge 2006
I just got done telling my wife about the whole whirlwind of a trip, including meeting some people I’ve admired for years, which blew my mind. I’ll likely get to talking about it publically when all this dies down and we have results. So, GO VOTE!!! Get your friends to vote, your family members, your myspace lists, your e-mail lists, let’s do this thing and change the world!!! etc…
FIRST… My hat is off to Platinum Studios for putting on a really great show. It might have looked like just a bunch of sitting around, but that was an ALLLLLL day thing and it was hot, some folks didn’t even eat until 10pm that night. Platinum had everyone taken care of there, and it might not mean much to them for me to shake their hand and thank them for putting on a good deal, but you all here know how jaded I’ve become over the years and how it’s hard to impress me with things like this– but these guys delivered a top notch show. Everyone who showed up, it was worth it. Even before I knew I was in the finals and was hitting the room for some rest, I thanked some of Platinum worker bees for just working hard all day and taking care of everyone with drinks, info, whatever you needed. This might all seem like public butt kissing to Platinum too, but it’s not. Heck, I didn’t even know some of the guys I were talking to were like, BIG staff there– And I also feel like ingeniune schmoozing, well, with the people I already know of who live and work in LA– dudes, they can see right through that…
It felt good that this whole thing was sincere….. hey, and I didn’t just thank them.. I was thankful for this whole experience. I even thanked the bus drivers and taxi cab operators who took me to and from the convention center, hotels, blah blah blah. Maybe it’s just hat little Fayette County, small town manners in a big city, but when I’d say thanks to someone, they knew I meant it. Even if it was just to the crazy cab driver who JAMMED me from the convention center to the airport in about 7 minutes when it should have taken 20 through a maze of traffic, trying to keep my fare down– or the other cab drivers who told me places to avoid, and boy were they right!!! But all in all, I was amazed at how NICE everyone was in the city, even the street bums were cordia.
OK– but i do want to say this guys and gals. I know some of you are REALLY passionate about me winning this thing, and i appreciate the hell out of that— but can we please be a little more nice and have some couth about the competition. I mean, just because I’m up against them doesn’t make them the “enemy” or we need to say bad things about them or make fun of them. Ironically enough, out of all of those people who tried their best, all three of us, the final 3, were on the same wall the first morning, the first ones to arrive! All sitting next together, like some weird FATE or chance destiny thing.
Ryan and his fiance, the ones from the Six Sins project are really nice! In fact, they saw my “Caution Dangerous When Awesome” shirt and immediately said it was great, and we talked all morning… in fact, I didn’t know they had gotten into the final 3 or that their project was the SIN story until we all showed up to go over contracts later that night, and I think we were all shocked that we made it together, what are the chances and odds of the three people on that wall being in the top 3? It’s something to me.
And Megan, the red head with the Lesbian Pirates project– she’s a great human being. Just because her project is called Lesbian Pirates from Space– is there really a need for Gay jokes or bashing? Meh… come on guys!!! Really, the eyes of the whole world are actually checking in here!
I encourage EVERYONE to just go and vote for what they think is the BEST idea to win something called THE COMIC BOOK CHALLENGE. — Again, I’m really flattered, humbled and floored by the outpouring of support I’ve received. I had 150+ e-mails just this morning from old and new people who said that even if I lost this somehow they WANT ME to make this comic. And that more than anything else really makes me feel like I have something that can make a real impact– Let’s show everyone we can do this with class! THANK YOU!
Ok– I have a myriad of stories to tell– but I have so much mail to go through and pimp work to do here. Thank you all for having my back while I was away. Especially my dear wife– or as I call her , the wife-inator!
Look guys, I know many are use to fighting tooth and nail for me, i DO appreciate it, but I’m not the underdog this time– I don’t feel like the underdog. Not that I’m overly confident either– but I’m far from an underdog this time guys.
OK! Back to mad pimpin!. Gotta let me JAMILY know about this!!!

Six Sins looks like a really interesting concept. If you don’t win DJ, i hope it’s them.

I voted using all of my many email addresses. I really like the Hero by Night concept and think it would be a huge success if properly handled. The Six Sins thing is OK, but as someone pointed out it’s been done before. It seems like a good idea for a Twilight Zone episode. I don’t know if I’d tune in every week to see it though.
The Lesbian Pirates from Space thing looks like the runt of the litter. I wonder how bad the other 10,000 entries were if this one made it. Nothing against lesbians — God only knows I’ve caused at least 10 women to take it up after dating me. It’s just a rather trite, too-cute-by-half concept, like something dreamed up by a not particularly creative ad agency. The creator is pretty hot, though, so I guess that counts for something.
Good luck, DJ — if they’re not using the Florida hanging chads voting system, I think you’ve got this nailed. Unless, of course, the huge, hidden army of lesbians gets wind of this — in which case, all bets are off. I’m guessing that Satan doesn’t really give a shit about the Six Sins entry either way.

Hi DJ,
Congratulations on being a finalist. I hope you win. Using several email addresses (some not my own) I voted for you multiple times….
I entered the challenge, but didn’t make it into the top 50. I didn’t think that I submitted total crap, but hey, I wasn’t a judge…
Anyway, after reading your 2 Hero By Night pages, it looks to me like you do have storytelling skills. I REALLY am wishing you good luck. If the Lesbian Pirates win, I’ll feel like this was nothing more than a ‘lottery’ (entries plucked from a hat, devoid of any talent or skill requirements)…. If you win, at least I’ll be content in the fact that someone won who actually might deserve it….
Good luck,
-Blake

Thanks for your enthusiasm, Blake. I appreciate the thought of trying to vote multiple times, but really, I think they said they log a cookie on your site, to only count one vote, so I don’t want people going through the trouble of multiple votes– although they did say IPs or Windows user logins were viable votes or something.
Anyways– I appreciate the vote and encouragement. Thanks!
