Local Boy Does Good…

What are the chances, that within 6 months, 2 comic artists from good ol’ Fayette County would make the mother crunking NY TIMES!? I was really pleased and proud to see my old buddy Jim Rugg in the NY TIMES article, I’ve known he’s been doing some work for DC for some time, but kept it under wraps until it was public knowledge.

I don’t know how long the article will be free, so I’ve saved it to my hard drive… here’s a link though.

Jim Rugg

From the Article:

“There’s so much you can do with the images and the pacing.” She credited Mr. Rugg, the artist of “The P.L.A.I.N. Janes,” as a prime source for advice.

Mr. Rugg, who is based outside Pittsburgh, said he appreciated the goal of Minx. “I liked their target demographic,” he said. “I like the idea of doing comics for an atypical reader.” In addition to creating the drawings, Mr. Rugg also gray-scaled them, giving the black-and-white comic book a sense of color. He finished his work last month.

One of Mr. Rugg’s previous comics was “Street Angel,” about a homeless teenage girl who fights crime, which he created with the writer Brian Maruca. Mr. Rugg, 29, called that comic, published by Slave Labor Graphics, his response to the typical depiction of women in mainstream comics, most particularly their impossibly proportioned bodies.

“It’s the same for men,” he acknowledged. “But I don’t find that as offensive.”

Anyway, I’m just so proud of Jim. We’ve rooted for each other all these years… it was oh, 12 years ago that we made fast friends, he was still a high school senior, and I was a bumbling bachelor, we trekked out to the Mid Ohio show… I don’t remember exactly what was said, but I know for the 3-4 hour drive to and fro, all we talked about was comics… and the types of comics we’d like to make some day. And now we’re both doing it. Two kids from Fayette County. What are the odds?

I hope to be like, 80 something and still BSing with Rugg about the comic medium. I have a good feeling that could happen.
