Kneel before Kazu Kibuishi.
There’s not many cartoonists out there who just knock my socks off these days. Kazu Kibuishi does. — I think he won the Eisner last year for Best Webcomic, and WOW does he deserve it. He recently put up a step-by-step of his Copper webcomic, and it’s amazing, it blows me away.
This mothercrunker draws on a 15×15 live area on a big sheet of bristol. OLD SCHOOL. It’s the type of thing, when you see a process like that, it jazzes you up. Or makes you feel like your current work is just totally CRAP. Thanks for making us all look bad, Kazu!
Interesting connection to Yirmumah…. Kazu married Amy Ganter, who was a previous Alumni of PV Comics where Yirmumah called home for a spell. They have some nice pics up of their studio there. Now there is a mothercrunking POWER couple of comics if I’ve ever seen one.
Ok… I’m going to go draw and feel completely inferior…. but at least I’m inspired. It’s been awhile.
And Now, ADS…

Oh man, I saw that Copper tutorial too, DJ. Dude is amazing.
I bought his “Daisy Kutter” book last year, and he has some great behind the scenes stuff in there, as well.

Wow! This is a fantastic tutorial - I’ve always wondered how Kazu created his strip - this answers everything. I particularly dig the strip’s use of color. Fantastic, fantastic stuff! Thanks for sharing the link, DJ!

I *love* seeing tutorials like this. Awesome.
It’s also kinda cool seeing the different ways people hold a pencil.
