They wanted something slow enough they could catch on foot and they wanted to be really pissed off when they got where they were going. I've never tried to catch a llama, but having met them on horse trails a few times I can vouch for their attitude. Pick the right llamas and the soldiers will definitely want to shoot something when they arrive where they're going.
