Hungry? Why Wait?

Pssttt… you can always read Hero By Night monday-friday over here. Still working hard on that. Things are going great, but I won’t bore you with repeated blabbering about just how awesome it is, or how mega awesome Platinum Studios and my editors are… I will mention that Drunk Duck will be doing more “Drunk Duck” alleys at the remaining Wizard World shows. I think this means that any Drunk Duck members who’d like a spot at those shows can totally get one. It’s an awesome deal if you can afford to travel around.
Dudes…. it snowed again yesterday. It’s COLD here. I’m friggin sick of it. It’s snowing in April. Totally wonderful. Stinking wonderful.
In fact, I bought a new lawnmower on a nice sunny day, looking forward to actually cutting the new lawn and territory at Stately Coffman Manor– I decide to “wait until tomorrow”– and it friggin snows. I’m actually in the mood to cut grass…. it snows. Somebody get me on a tropical island, STAT!
Now, I don’t officially live in Fayette-Nam (Fayette COunty, PA) anymore. But I could literally pick up a rock and throw it and hit Fayette-Nam. But, I bring this up because some sad news out of Fayette-Nam, we’ve known the guy’s story for awhile locally, but it just hit the New York Times. This local kid, Sam Ross– like many others in this area, grew up out of a broken home, had a shitty childhood and looked to the military as an escape route out of here. He loved it. The military, he felt, was where he belonged. He said he was “made for war” — Then, like 40 days into said war… he got blown up. — With no eyesight, missing a leg, and hearing in only one ear, they sent him back to Fayette-Nam, where he was greeted with a parade and a hero’s welcome. Then, his life spiraled downward, and fast. His escapades of beating up police and fighting have been in the local papers— but then he set his old family trailer on fire, because be believed it needed to be burned (too many bad memories there?) - they put him in jail, isolation… he tried to hang himself. Now he’s in a psych ward, and FINALLY they’re treating him for post traumatic stress and depression, something the geniuses at Walter Reed had never figured out to do in the first place before shipping him back into society. Here’s the link to the full NY times story.
This kid had it rough. He had nothin man. NOTHING. Now he’s back stuck here in Fayette-Nam. Blind. One leg. Half Hearing, and a mind all jacked up. It seems he feels like he still has nothing at all, but I’m more to the thinking that this man has a REAL story on his hands. Something that he can share, so that future generations won’t forget. Here’s to Sam Ross… a true American hero… whether he knows it yet or not.
Man, I feel really lucky to be alive today. You know?

That story is either sad or FREAK’N HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The image of a blind one legged man causing that much trouble, taking on the cops and the failing to off himself in jail, is very amusing.
BTW: Unfortunately that story is far from unique in this country or even to this war.

Even if it wasn’t a true story it would mirror stories in almost every state. I’m a Veteran. I know I would hate to rely on the VA for help. Hopefully they get it straightened out. I heard on the radio this week that they are FINALLY going to start seriously investigating head trauma as not just a physical injury but a mental health one as well and that should open up some doors to treatment.

Yeah, Wiz. I was trying to draw this comic sooner but I had the same problem. I would just zone out on them from time to time.

Loving the Yirmumah cartoons again - it was these that brought me to this site.
