How I’ll likely die…
Alex Toth, a legendary llustrator passed away at age 77…. at his drawing board. I had met him twice before and he always seemed in good spirits and told us he was always wanting to draw or create. This was a message from his son:
Hello.
I am Alex’s oldest son Eric. I meant to be the one to let everyone know that my father did pass away this morning drawing/writing at his table. I do not have any further details other than I will forward an address for those interested in sending cards. We will arrange something appropriate at or around the convention this summer in San Diego. As John shared, all of your cards and letters of the recent past were very much appreciated by my father. Only in these last years did he begin to understand and accept the fact that his work had touched so many people’s lives. In time, more information will follow.
Thank you.
Eric and family.
Wow. That’s crazy. You can learn more about him HERE.
Just about everyone knows his characters though….

As warriors are born and wish to die an honorable death in battle, I honestly think cartoonists urge to die at their desks, doing what they’ve done the best. You can take a break now Alex!

Truly a sad piece of news, but hearing how he passed takes some of the sting out of it.
I mean, how many folks can claim they spent their life doing something they loved so much it could never be called work and passed doing that very thing…
I’d wish such an end for myself if it were at all possible.
For some reason now I’m picturing DJ, at the age of 150 or so, keeling over at the tiki bar with his pencil in one hand and a mai-tai in the other, uke music in the background, and on the paper before him is a picture of a cute little bunny saying “Fuck!”…

I’m saddened by this news, but I’m glad to hear he was able to do what he loved right up until the end.
The rest of us should be so lucky.
Godspeed, Mr Toth.
