Hooray for Bollywood

It’s come to my attention that Bollywood is stealing art from webcomics, including our’s. You can see all the details along with photos at this link. Thanks to Ryan Estrada for this heads up.

I’ve sent a nice letter to them at their contact address site: http://www.baseindustries.in/contact.htm , but the
contact email address bounced. I sent another e-mail to the webmaster listed on the site’s registration data. I guess since they didn’t bother to ask to use the art, I’ll just send an invoice to their office address.

Nothing is likely to come of this, as it’s pretty hard to track down things across the globe, let alone get them to pay. It makes me wonder, Ryan caught this
one by chance, but how many other things like this are going on stealing from webcomic art that we don’t know about? My guess is, plenty. May the God of smite rain upon them. Actually, the more I think about this situation, the more utterly hilarious it becomes.

Bollywood is stealing from webcomics! Bwhahahahah

I wonder if they’d be dumb enough to steal the first panel where it says “Fuck Bollywood”. Now… that WOULD be a hoot!

Dude, something totally similar happened to me!

JJ. MCCullough who is the artist behind Filibuster was on vacation in Mexico when he wandered into a bookstore looking for a map. Turns out he found some of my artwork stolen and put on the cover of a word puzzle book!

Of course I tried writing the company behind it, but got no response.

The world is getting smaller, my man!

That one guy looks like Carlos Mencia as Batman.

I don’t know if you are familiar with the website rocktoons.com, but their artwork gets used all over the place. Apparently there’s a company in Singapore that prints out everything, from poster to mouse-pads using their cartoons and there’s little the owner can do.

  6. Ryan Estrada Says:

I’ve sent the story to every newspaper in Mumbai. If your e-mails don’t rattle them into some action, maybe the bad press will. And as far as Tom’s comment goes, I’ll be in Mexico soon, so I’ll hunt down all the webcomic thefts there, too!

Here’s an interview with the director, bragging about using comics in the ads.

Q: The promos of the film include comic strips.

A: Yes, we had an idea of making the film look as if it’s an adaptation of some comic strip. It is a light-hearted film with a comic feel to it. There are a lot of graphics in the film with every character in turning into a comic book figure.

Wait… does that mean maybe there are stolen comics in the film too? Oh lord, I hope I don’t have to go watch it to find out.

    Oh, man.

Ryan, if you can find a bootleg, pick it up. I’ll send you money for it plus the shipping back to the states. i gotta see if they actually use anything in there. :D

  9. Crapknocker Says:

Well, at least you can rest easy knowing that whatever the movie is about isn’t nearly as interesting as the comics they illegally used to promote it.

  10. Escobar Says:

I thought the batman guy kinda looked like James Earl Jones.

  11. Marty Says:

Wow, I actually grew up with that guy. Ryan and I were in art classes together, although he was always into drawing cartoony things, and I liked drawing them realistically. Last I heard he was traveling around the world. Denise even asked me about him the last time I saw her.
