Hiatus Day 2: Slack Attack!

So it’s 9am here, I’m all alone as my wife is working day shift for three days, and the kids are off to school.

Hiatus does not mean “no work” though. Later today I’ll be working on a guest strip I promised Wiz, then busting into some more Hero By Night issue 4 art.

We have sort of an interesting dilemma with issue four, that being there are actually two different versions of issue 4 written because my editors at the time wanted to bring some things together that I never really felt worked, or it seemed rushed to me. Now that I have new editors, they weren’t aware of all the rewriting and reworking I did back in October last year. A few scenes in issue three were like this too, and changed back to almost the way I originally had it worked out. Not to slight my old editors, they just didn’t know enough about crafting a comic book together. The main main problem was, they were stuck in this three act structure and trying to meld that into 4 issues of a comic book and it didn’t work. No harm, no foul though, it’s all good in the neighborhood. I see every issue as a way to give the readers satisfaction, and leave them wanting more at the end. In a normal three structure story, there’s like a big low point for the main character, but in comics storytelling I think you can mix and match those around to make the comic a real page turner, instead of a predictable path.

Come to think of it, I think this is why most comic book movies are so different then the actual comics themselves. Take for instance the outfits of the X-men– there was some griping (well there’s ALWAYS griping) from comic book aficionados about the black leather suits. They wanted the classic Xmen blue and yellow. But i guess in film, blues and yellows don’t really work on screen properly, it can effect lighting and moods trying to be set. But everything dark looks good on the screen. Even the Fantastic Four’s outfits are a bit darker. Certain story elements that work in continuity in comic book arcs, don’t fit well into a 2 hour movie either, so things are always changed around plot wise to make that 2 hour film into a stand alone story. If there was ever a Hero By Night movie, I imagine it would be different story wise.

Comic Books written like that though, become predictable I think. At least in my opinion. Well, anything can be predictable I guess.

Pittsburgh ComicCon planning:
I have my nifty display rack system I take to local shows, but I realized the big shelves might be too big if I only have a 6 foot table there, so I opted for the smaller shelves so I don’t fill the entire section with the display. I might run to Kinkos and make some sort of big Hero By Night Logo for the top extension of the rack, and maybe some flyers for the show pimping the online stuff. Hmmm.

Comic Pimps: I guess my sons have been coming home from school and saying kids at school want to buy copies of HBN1 and 2 I have here. Now they come home with orders from their friends– unbelievable, but cool. If it keeps up, I’m just going to give my kids an order form with prices for their friends. It’s cooler than cool that kids want this book that bad when they see other kids reading it on the bus.

I’m off to watch “The Good Shepherd” dvd and do some sketching, then I’m off to work work.
