Help Bob get a cheap computer

You may have noticed a lack of Bob around Yirmumah recently– reason being, Bob has no computer. Not only that, but try as he may, Bob just can’t seem to catch a break and just has extremely bad luck lately. A few readers took up a fund on the forum that didn’t get much notice, and I greatly appreciate that.

So, if no one else can give him a hand up, YIRMUMAH WILL. I’m encouraging everyone who can, to donate whatever to help Bob get a decent system. The current goal is $550 bucks, which should be able land him a decent emachine at WalMart or a Dell.

SEND DONATIONS HERE: the “HELP BOB BUY A MOTHER LOVING COMPUTER” fund - the goal “$550″

Here’s what you’ll get…. You’ll have a complete maniac online every day, and I’ll setup his own section of the site for a “Bob-Blog” where he can post videos, blogs, whatever he wants to go on a tyrade about. I’m sure he’d talk about gambling and women as well, or challenge MORE ultimate fighters to one-on-one matches, or mock people with no talent.

Each day until we reach the goal, I’ll update some sort of graphic for the top banner spot. The future of Bob at this site… now rests in YOUR HANDS.

Oi gang, for the love of God do not get a E-Machine or a HP at walmart. They are non-upgradeable, and have a very limited shelf life. I’m a Network Administrator, and if I were to recommend anything prefab, it’d be a Dell or a IBM. I’m sure any other IT geeks would agree with me as well. For $550, you can get a sweet Dell, with a freakin’ 15inch LCD monitor to boot. Please, give it serious thought. I’d stake my professional reputation on Dell’s stuff. The entire U.S. Navy runs on’em, and pretty well I might add. Here’s a link, for a machine in your price range. Don’t buy the extended warranty or any other crap, and it’ll stay right at $550 + shipping. Best of luck to to ya Bob! (I’ll send a few bones too).

Yeah, I’ve gotten a few e-mails about that…. There is a custom PC place locally that doesn’t seem bad, he could probably get a decent system there, used Dell or Gateway beefed to whatever he needed. I imagine.

My old Gateway Pentium3 was a great little computer for a LONG time, but I sold it when I bought my Dell, or I would have just loaned it to Bob.

  3. Steve Sloan Says:

I totally agree. I do IT consulting at a large NYC government agency (15,000+ employees) and we use Dell with great success. I have owned E-Machines and cannot warn you strongly enough to stay away! HP runs hot and cold but I wouldn’t buy one for myself even if I used someone else’s money.

I’ll send some $$ next week when my check has cleared.

  4. Joe Says:

Local shops arn’t too bad. It pays to shop around, as most local shops can’t compete price wise with the big-boys like Dell. I’m not entirely sure what happened recently, but prices have dropped for most Dells and thier competitors. I suspect a price war has broken out. That rig I posted would have never sold for under 600 bucks 3 months ago (550 with a freaking LCD monitor? Damn). Something to keep in mind I suppose!

    Party on Wayne,

  5. keith Says:

The money’s coming Bob! It’s coming!

  6. Murch Says:

Though I totally agree with you on HP (Great printers and other stuff, but bollocks for PCs), I have to disagree about the eMachine. I own one myself, and I have to say that it is most CERTAINLY upgradeable, seeing as pretty much the only thing left for me to upgrade is the mobo/processor. Lil’ ole bugger is just a-trucking along.

  7. woodchuckles Says:

  23. Shiva Says:

Yes please…go with something other than an Emachine. Now if this turned into the “buy Bob a dell” fund…I think that more people would be chipping.

    Emachines are the devil momma!

I’m still working on the “brick” fund, so I don’t know how well the “puter” fund is going to go @_@

  24. Cracka Keith Says:

    I got a brick. A brick of f’n silence!

  25. Cracka Keith Says:

    Ok, here’s what you do.
Get everybody you know to chip in $1 measly f’n dollar. Multiple that by the number of people in Yirmumah and you’ll have some $$$$ to get Bob a cpu and maybe a printer.

  26. cousin Jim Says:

I gots a dollas I could puts in to get masah Bobs a computah.

  27. Cracka Keithi Says:

    Jim, your broke.

  28. Cracka Keith Says:

    HA, HA, HA, HA!!!!!

  29. Jim Says:

I’d just like to point out that

    A. eMachines done got bought out by Gateway, and now their systems be extremely decent.
    B. Their tech support is now rated better than Dell (in large part because Dell shipped theirs overseas).
    C. My old man’s lady just got an eMachine at Best Buy for $549 (The marketing equivalent of $550. ) and it’s extremely decent. Came with a flat panel 17″ monitor too.

I cracked the thing open and it has an AMD Athlon 64 3200 + processor in it, 512 gigs of DDR RAM, from what I could tell an extremely nice little MOBO in it, and a DVD+RW drive. At the price she got it for, it’d almost be cheaper to buy one of these and upgrade it into a gaming rig by taking the parts out of the case and slapping it in a new box with a new PS some extra RAM and a new Graphics card that would be better’n the onboard graphics it came with. I know Bob doesn’t want a gaming rig, but this is probably what I’ll do when I rebuild my Rig, as the parts I’m looking to replace are the nice ones in that box (namely the CPU, which is quite a bit better’n mine).

But for the love of God, don’t buy anything with Intel in it.

  30. Cracka Keith Says:

Yes, listen to Jim. He knows what he’s talking about. Trust me, Jim’s a good guy.

  31. DJ Says:

Ok, I edited out the HP line– too many hate mails about HP machines… the newer e-machines are pretty decent—- so it would be that or a Dell… IF we can raise the money up. Which I’m sure we’ll be able to. We’ll have to see what the local guys can build, or what’s new on the market and figure out what’s best.

Plus, Bob is no computer wizard– so I’m sure he’ll be happy with anything that gets him online and in the biznass.

  32. Cracka Keith Says:

AMEN! Bob’ll be browsing porno before we know it.

  33. Neil Says:

Well I was going to refuse donating money because Bob already has the pen and paper, but if he’d be using it to peruse porn then I might reconsider.

  34. Cracka Keith Says:

Not just any porn, Hardcore XXX American Porn!

  35. DJ Says:

Well, we’re up to 75 for the day– not bad at all guys!!! Thanks much to everyone who donated to this.. uhm… worthy cause??? Seriously, if Bob gets online, it’ll be mere weeks before he cures mother crunking cancer!

  36. L.O.T.G.A. Says:

I donated $5. S’not much, but it’s all I can spare at the moment.

  37. DJ Says:

    Thanks L.O.T.G.A. !

  38. B. Says:

Get him a Mac (mini) ! To ease his suffering!

  39. Monster Says:

Shoot. Now I gotta buy a brick of silence to hurl at that guy suggesting Bob get a mac.

  40. schpat Says:

Hey DJ should sell “virtual bricks of silence”. Say for instance you don’t like what some dude or dudette is saying the the forum, but every time you throw your brick it just bounces off the screen. Well for a donation of $0.25 or less, DJ could tack a big “Virtual Brick of Silence” onto that post with the name of the contributor. Would really have worked a treat with those NAMBLA guys.

I assume this could all be automated thought. Whjat do you think?

  41. Ken Says:

    I put in $10 - I hope it helps.
