Guest Comic Deadlines, Info.

I was seriously thinking of goofing off and just drawing stick figures on Tues and Thurs to stay in the GRIND competition, but screw it. I just don’t have the time or energy right now. I’m actually having a SHIT-TON of fun writing and sketching out “Hero By Night” #4, the final issue in the miniseries, and then I have stuff to focus on for the new house possibly… so yeah, it’s a good time to take YIRM to M-W-F and play on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

So….. GUEST STRIP details. Let’s set a Halloween deadline for the first batch. Anyone sends one in, I’ll use it, and send in the info you want me to link to with your own strips or projects. Only rule… the final image should be 475 pixels wide by 700 tall. The height can be taller, but keep it 475 wide please. HEY, go nuts! Some of you creators out there I know have told me that sometimes you see the line in your comic and can’t cross it like we do at Yirmumah…. so here’s your chance to cross the line and do a little touchdown dance.

Llamas battling burger kings? Tap Dancing Asses, Bikers, Witches, Hobos?? Characters old and new.. crossovers?. whatever… the sky is the limit here. Get your pencils sharpened and snap to it.

And Tune in tomorrow for a special announcement!…. maybe??? Hopefully.

  2. Jester Says:

DJ, stay in the Grind, man. Jennie isn’t gonna win if you drop out. Tim Hulsizer or TK Longmire are, because their work requires zero effort. I mean, for God’s sake, *I* could draw a TK Longmire “comic” every day, and my art skills peaked a year before kindergarten.

And guest comics suck 99.44% of the time. You don’t want your own crappy work on your site, but you want someone ELSE’s crappy work?

You know what? F*** playing defense. Go on offense.

I think you should devote Tuesdays and Thursdays to a “State of Webcomics” comic. Pick the saddest, most pathetic webcomic you can find, then have a variety of your comics characters MST it… in that artist’s style. If that means a Deej stick figure or a Charlie (LAB) finger-paint, do that.

Or hell, man, you’re doing work every day. Post two panels from whatever you work on that day as your entry, sort of a George Lucas comic blog. ;-)

Anyway, the other thing you’re doing if you drop out is celebrating mediocrity in judging, because the current Grind judges are for shit. They’re so concerned with being liked that they’re not even trying. They’re certainly not doing their jobs as JUDGES. A dozen of the remaining Grinders should have been out or should be out, but the judges don’t seem to be bothered with it any more. If I was the judge of the Grind, it’d be down to six or eight at this point: you, Jennie, Brandon, Steve Troop, Brad Guigar, and a couple of others who are actually putting out daily quality work either in their art or in their humor. The fact that the judges won’t do their job is a crime.

You don’t need to stay in the Grind to win the Grind. You need to stay in the Grind because it’s a moral imperitive to point out that there’s still more than six or seven people in that contest that care about their work.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cal_Ripken,_Jr.

“During “The Streak”, Cal played nearly the entire game each game, averaging 99.8% of time on the field. Ripken refused to make token appearances in games to keep the streak alive.”

“On September 20th before the final home game of the season against the New York Yankees, Ripken decided to end his streak. The consecutive game playing streak ended at 2,632 games. Rookie third baseman Ryan Minor started in his place. Realizing that the streak was coming to an end, the fans, his teammates, and the visiting Yankees gave Ripken an ovation after the game’s first out was recorded.[4] Ripken later stated that he decided to end the streak at the end of the season, to avoid an off-season controversy about his playing status.”

Jesus. Stop trying to make DJ stay in the Grind, it’s his decision if he wants to drop out. He’s going to lose, what, just over $1000 just because he feels himself a bit busy trying to not screw up Hero By Night, which might make him, let’s say, $HolyCrap more than that?

“You don’t need to stay in the Grind to win the Grind. You need to stay in the Grind because it’s a moral imperitive to point out that there’s still more than six or seven people in that contest that care about their work.” This is something of a good point, but he’s specifically said he’s dropping out of the grind so he can care about his work… on something else. Specifically HBN. At the moment I’m working on a book for my own comic and I can barely find time to update once a week. The fact that he’s been updating consistently ever since he got this deal, never mind the past three years, is really something I admire, because of the workload he’s got. Getting anywhere as an artist is a hard goddamn job, and DJ’s definitely put in the hours to deserve something like this. Now we’ve got people telling him that dropping out of the Grind would be a Bad Thing because he’s “one of the six or seven people left who care about their work.” Putting care and passion into your work takes time - possibly, apparently, more than he’s got to keep Y! and HBN on the same level of quality he’s kept them and wants them to be.

I think I actually respect DJ more since he’s focusing more on his print comic than Y! because he’s pretty much working his ass off not to lower his standards of quality - in fact he’s actually trying to improve on them - for a real job, something that would get him most likely a lot more money and prestige than Y!.

DJ’s outright said that the Grind would be a pointless win for him. He apparently doesn’t mind quitting at all, despite everything he’s said about winning. Get the hell over it.

  5. Jester Says:

Eh, I suppose you’re right. It’s just frustrating for me when half the Daily Grind comics are roughly equivalent to this level of quality:

    http://goodvevil.com/temp/dg-2006.10.17.gif

I wouldn’t mind so much if a true webcomic artist were going to win it, but that’s clearly not gonna happen.

  6. Splendidisolatn Says:

Thank you jester for posting that link. I was feeling too smart today and needed something to hurt my mind enough that I’d be dumbed down a bit and thanks to you, I got it.

    Happy to help. ;-)

    DJ,

If you drop out of the grind you just gotta update the dropout pick. Something cool mmmkay.

  9. Sean C Says:

Hmm, I think I’ll try to get a guest strip done for ya, DJ. I think I’ve got the perfect idea for it, too…

  10. Krishna Says:

Count me in, too. Here’s my chance to go nuts and do something a bit more risque than what I usually do on my webcomic.

  11. Al Nickerson Says:

That Daily Grind thing is still going? How come ya haven’t won that yet, DJ?

  12. The Gigcast » Blog Archive » Hero By Night Diaries Says:

[…] DJ Coffman announced today that Hero By Night Diaries has gone to M-F update schedule. DJ Coffman only recently launched Hero By Night Diaries on Drunk Duck and put his other comic Yirmumah on a M-W-F schedule (on a side note DJ is looking for Guest strips for Yirmumah). Hero By Night Diaries seems to have gotten a warm welcome and in my opinion looks sharp. DJ says “I’m excited to be able to flesh out the world of the original Hero By Night via his journals. This is a whole new way of telling a story for me, and I look forward to not just creating a static comic strip, but a world the readers can get immersed in, or dig as deep as they’d like with clues or plots within many of the installments. Over time, I think it will be great when say for example, strip # 50 features something mentioned briefly in a prior strip, and will be a nice payoff for readers that are really paying “. […]
