Ghost Story

C’mon, you didn’t really think I was gonna get all soft on ya?
Oddly enough, yesterday, my wife went to the graveyard yesterday to take her grandma there to the new grave of here grandfather. She took a couple pics on her new cellphone, and well, one is just kinda freaking us out. She says it was swirling all around and moving, and she took these pictures– in one you can see it, a second later in the other, it’s gone.

and gone

I’m one of the biggest skeptics when I see stuff like this or that on TV, but this freaked me out.

That is so bizarre and awesome. You win, DJ, you win!

HEEHEH
I hope you get a ghost wedgie for that…

Wait. I’ve always heard that once people get married that they stop having sex “a lot.” Kudos to you then. Also, Ghost Gramps with the fish = kinda sad for Gramps. I mean, he spends his whole death carrying around with a fishbowl? That’s gotta get old FAST.
But ain’t nothing funnier than Total Ghost Smackdown, esp if the participants are geriatrics on top of it all.

Geez. And here I was about to apologize for being insensitive yesterday. Heh heh.
February 24th, 2006 at 1:15 pm
atleast he didnt throw the fish bowl at him

Actually the ‘’smoke” on the picture is a natural phenomena that often happens in graveyards. You see, when a body decomposes, the chemical reaction that occures causes gases to be released. It probably popped out from underground at the same time the picture was taken, so you guys are pretty lucky! I think that it also produces a small amount of light, so at night you can see some also.

You should do a bit of research though, since its been a long time I’ve heard of this phenomena and I maybe gave you an erroneous explanation. Don’t worry though, its nothing supernatural, just Mother Nature messin’ with ya.
Actually, I even remember a teacher tell me that once, one of his uncles, who worked at a morgue, was taking a smoke from a cigar while working on some corpse. Suddenly a ball of fire just popped out right in front of his face! The released gas was ignited by his cigar, but it only burned for less than a second, so it didn’t hurt his face. He still was dazed and fell backwards though.

Oh crap, sorry about the double post!! I cancelled the first post to add my litte story… seems I did it too late. :S Sorry again!
February 24th, 2006 at 2:31 pm
I’ve never heard of that before, nor seen anything like that. I think the coffins are pretty air tight, not to mention, they put the coffin in a fiberglass or concrete casing to protect if from the elements, so I can’t see how any gas would really be escaping?? Weird.. I’ll look it up more online.

The simple CCDs in cellphones and point-and-shoot digital cameras are also notorious for picking up light anomallys such as orbs and blurs that ghost hunters like to call ghosts.
February 24th, 2006 at 5:21 pm
wow. creepy. i was looking through old pictures and found some orbs and light rods on a few. but hey, D.J You know what you should do? Make a comic of the ghost fight.
February 24th, 2006 at 7:22 pm
Don’t listen to these explanations… That’s your wife’s “pappy”…
When I looked at that “blur” or whatever I immeadiately saw a man’s figure standing with his back to the camera..
You can’t see his legs, but the upper torso and head are there…
His hair appears to be gray or white, and he appears to be wearing a “plaid” jacket.. He’s just a bit taller than the female figure at the grave and looking across at the car in the photo…
Tell your wife for me, that’s the real thing.. And it’s a sign.. He was there, and he will be there for her, waiting to greet her when it’s her time to go… and to let her know that everything is all right..
Condolences on your loss…
May God bless and keep you and yours in the coming days..

Heya Dj,
As you know, I’m a photographer. And unfortunately, I’ve got some news: that’s lens flare from the sun.
February 24th, 2006 at 9:21 pm
Charlie Taylor– it was cloudy and overcast today– so no sun was out
Hey, I’m the most skeptical mothercrunker on the planet, but thats one heck of an anomaly to have in that spot, looks like a guy to me, at least head and shoulders…
February 24th, 2006 at 9:52 pm
Yeah, I can definitely see the person in that. And if he smoked a pipe or cigars I’m gonna be really weirded out because that looks like smoke from something in his hand.
And just as food for thought, according to Buddhist beliefs about reincarnation and the bardo, a “spirit” can sort of reject it’s death and wander the earth for 7 days, 7 different times. So, according to that belief, it’s possible that her grandfather could wander the world, coming to terms with the end of his past lifetime. I didn’t explain it very well, and this information is from a time where I read many texts from different “factions” so to speak, so I’m sure there are probably different beliefs on the fact. If memory serves, this was from a modernized version of the Tibetan Book of the Dead that also expanded it into Life for the first half. I can’t remember the author, and I really wish I could, because it’s an amazing book.
February 24th, 2006 at 9:56 pm
“The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying” by Sogyal Rinpoche. I suggest it highly for anyone even slightly interested in the subject.

SCIENCE WILL DESTROY YOU ALL! MU-HAHAHAHAHAHAA!!!
Or something like that… *ahem*… Funny strip.

I am in a chinese internet cafe right now, its whack. For starters there are heaps of peeps palying two mmorpgs simaltaneously which to me is gaming to the maxtream, and a squad of police was here just before making sure people werent looking at porn or something. I wasnt sure if yrim was going to pop up with something, would have had my ass dragged to the prison. Also was ordering a burger this morning and the armoured car was tehre to pick up the cash, looked more like a counterstrike spawn point. FARK.
February 25th, 2006 at 1:36 pm
That’s not a ghost; that’s an MSN buddy icon!
Also, I can’t believe no one else said anything about the “Ghost Hammer.” I love the concept of a ghost hammer.
February 25th, 2006 at 11:33 pm
Yeah, it’s gone on the second photo. Or is it? The soul’s still there - only moving faster to heaven. Look at the tree, the right one. There’s two whiter marks that almost look to “make in incision in the tree”. You can’t see the rest of the soul because the rest of the sky is as white as the soul is.
Creepy? I’m sure. Logical explanation? Hundreds, if not thousands, of. Will you or anyone who was present ever believe in any of these logical explanations?
No.
Right now, you’re fighting against it, DJ. Somehow, your emotional mind believes it was true - something emerged from the corpse and was SOMEHOW, captured by a digital system that is more accurate than the human eye ( which is actually true, since some CMOS camera sensors catch some UV and IR and represent them as visible blank light ). Point is, your rational mind is fighting against it - either because you’re too scared to admit you SAW something, or because you don’t want to believe in something.
I’m not telling you you SAW something at all. My opinion stays as camera white balance glitch, since I’m also skeptical about anything that ever defies the laws of physics I know.
All I’m saying is - use this moment to think. About what? I don’t know, whatever you fell comfortable with. I am inclined to believe nothing gets us more prepared to think than fear and surprise.
February 25th, 2006 at 11:39 pm
Okay, I don’t want to freak you out more than you already are but I can’t resist: The “spirit” on the first photo looks VERY MUCH like the ones you drew in your previous comic…
February 25th, 2006 at 11:45 pm
dude i think the book you sent may have gotten lost or sent to the wrong house becuase i still havent gotten it
that or the mailman is enjoying it i dunno but it sucks
the ghost is pretty crazy dude but i dunno what it is and im not goign to make any kind of guesses because im not religious but i cant find anythgin else to say what it is
February 26th, 2006 at 6:31 am
Craig– not sure what to tell you on the post office– some people have gotten theirs, others haven’t yet– I talked to a guy who just got his after a wait. Actually, the bulk of the initial orders were all sent out the 13th and 14th, so it’s only been around 10 business days. I bet all the remaining books get where they’re going this week. Don’t panic! If the book comes back to me returned, then I’ll have to send you another one with some sort of delivery confirmation.
Malogro– I’m not freaked out at all. I have a pretty rational mind about supernatural things. Obviously, there are things science hasn’t figured out yet, and it’s fascinating to think about. I may do a longer blog about the subject today, I am keenly aware that when I saw that picture it gave me a freaky chill because it did remind me of the “spirit lines” i draw.
February 28th, 2006 at 1:05 am
i’m also kinda a photographer, and actually, it is lens flare. even when it’s overcast, there’s flare. look at the top vs. bottom picture: the top is much lighter because it got the direct sun (or part of it) in the top right corner, which caused the flare. the bottom one is much darker because the sun is just out of the picture, so no flare.
