Item: Work progresses well on HERO BY NIGHT. I pretty much have the first issue’s script tweaked out and all the pages laid out (really rough thumbnails) and we’re moving into work on issue 2 next week on the writing side. MAN (women) I tell you, Hero by Night is going to ROCK THE CASBAH!!!! Platinum Studios has been fantastic, especially my editor. I think it’s the first time I’ve worked with a REAL editor. I don’t want to say that to be mean to any online editors at websites I’ve worked for. The closest I can think of is Chris Ryall at poopshoot, who went on to be the big boss at IDW, but really he wasn’t like an editor editor who told us what to so, only when we made glaring mistakes on lettering. Up until this point, my only experience working with someone editing, it was the writers themselves, who I’ve learned a great deal from…. especially now that I’m all WRITING and stuff now. GEEZ! Who knew? — Anyway, I’m psyched.

Item: A BIG shout out to writer Aric Mitchell and artist Ken Leinaar. As it turned out, after the contest was all said and done and I won with Hero By Night, just two weeks ago it was brought to my attention that Ken and Aric had a comic they had been working on for a long time but had some publisher problems, and it had the same name! UGH!!! I had a giant pitt in my stomach over this, thinking I’d have to totally change my name, they even owned the herobynight.com name! I had owned it previously in like 2003, but let it expire or something. So, there we were at a stalemate…. BUT, this is the perfect example of just GOOD communication. I offered to buy the URL name from them, and Aric agreed, he also went the extra mile and signed a document releasing any claim to the name he might have in the future. This protects me because well, when I won the contest, in my contract it states I OWN the name and I’m selling it to Platin They had been thinking about changing their name in the past and decided they didn’t want to cause any problems for my chances with my Hero By Night. And, to boot, I think I made a couple of NEW FRIENDS out of it! Aric and Ken have been at the comic publishing game for a long time, and we share many similar sour experiences with comic publishers. — Aric will be writing a column at Scryptic Studios soon, and I promised to plug their book with it’s new name here when it comes out or is available. Thanks again to those guys… it was good dealing with GOOD PEOPLE these last two weeks with all the other jive I was taking.

Item: With that news there out of the way, it’s safe to tell you all to keep an eye on HEROBYNIGHT.COM — Some surprises coming!

Item: Looks like Fleen broke some news about a PENNY ARCADE video game made by Hothead Games. Man, will that be neat to run around and be a fruitfucker? I think some people’s dream’s just came true. LINK

Item: My boy Wiz Rollins is looking for an artist for a small gig. Paying work yo… submissions are open until the 31st of August, see THIS LINK.

Item: Lea Hernandez (who I sort of slugged it out with last week) has interviewed TYCHO on her new podcast, but of course it’s been milked out to a TWO week interview for maximum exposure. I think that’s funny because I was accused of “dropping Tycho’s name with a thud” last week. I don’t know what she’s dropping it like, but it’s a funny listen. Especially the part where she’s thinking she’s talking to the artist and compliments Tycho on his drawing but is quickly corrected. Maybe it was a mistake, or maybe she just went into it misinformed. Or it could be the pills she talked about on her blog prior.
I especially liked the term “DivaLeaP”. As in “DivaLeaP” to conclusions. LINK

Item: Joey Manley and I sort of sparred around this week over on the “TALK ABOUT COMICS” blog, wherein he was worried about creators, like myself, “giving work away”, pertaining to my deal with Platinum. I set the record straight that no one is giving anything away. I was probably going at him a bit too harshly calling his comments “passive agressive” , something I’ve been called in the past and it didn’t feel good, but he wasn’t approving any comments I left there that were critical, I was beginning to think the name of the blog was “TALK ABOUT COMICS…IF JOEY SAYS” …. heh. BUT LOOK… I’ve been around the block on BOTH sides of the comic book industry, publishing, freelancing, even a little retailing, since 1994! I’m not stupid. And if there’s anyone who wants to see independent creators succeed, it’s ME. My message and response to all of that is… hey, don’t sit on ALL of your ideas thinking they could all go somewhere some day. Dust off some, maybe try selling them to companies, get yourself a GOOD deal, and then continue publishing things yourself as well! Everyone wins.

And for those people gunning for me, criticizing me, trying to spin me? You’d better get use to me if you plan on being around COMICS. I’ve been here for a long time, well before “webcomics” and I’m not going anywhere. Learn to love me. It’s not so bad, even if you find my sudden fits of temper amusing. I’m working on that though… Joey just knows how to tug at my heart strings.

I’m glad we came to an understanding about the “giving away” aspect though. Now Joey is getting deep talking about scorpions on frog’s backs and then old men running around in mazes and junk, likely trying to get his points across in metaphors that can’t get him into any hot water. But as it stands right now….. Joey is running around in a maze with glass walls with old people laughing at him, Eric Millikin is wishing for a Minotaur to show up and Lea Hernadez is sitting around eating and laughing at the kids. Me? I’m all about the helicopter and or jetpack.

  1. Lea Hernandez Says:

It’s two shows because I had 90 minutes of audio. Too damn much for one show.

Jerry wrote me, I wrote back and said I was re-starting my podcasting, would he like to be interviewed some time, he said “How about now?”, and I did it, and that was pretty much it.
Jerry’s a nice guy with an incredibly good memory.
Yeah, the comment on the drawing. I know Tycho/Jerry writes and Gabe/Mike draws. I could’ve easily edited it out, y’know.

I did the interview on Thursday of last week, a long time before I took the Vicuprofen. (http://divalea.livejournal.com/371517.html) I know you were just joshing, I’d hate for anyone to think I took “pills” because they trust you to give it to them straight. It was just the one.
I was pretty dopey, but I doubt that I can be drugged into the past.

Now, jetpacks…like Jonny Quest or The Rocketeer? Crotch-killing straps or a button fire? Helicopters? Stay away from them CrashHawks! What abut a personal hovercraft? I’m sure they don’t really explode on impact, like in The Incredibles.

Nobody’s come to TDLS from your link yet, but thanks anyway.

  2. DJ Says:

Well I just posted it tonight, I’m sure they will or they wont.

    I say push button jetpacks.

  3. Calypso Says:

DJ dear, I think you are being way too nice!! What the EHF is wrong wit’ you?? Am I going to have to slap you around some more??!! Don’t make me choke a bitch?!?

  4. vitamin-d Says:

    Choke, choke, choke, choke!

    Please?

Also, Rocketeer style jetpacks for the win.
