Farrelly Brothers Accuse South Park of stealing an idea that YIRMUMAH did before them all!
If you’re looking for today’s comic, check the previous post.
Ok, so apparently, the Farrelly Brothers are ACCUSING South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone of stealing the idea of a guy faking being retarded to join the special olympics. (See link)This in itself is retarded, because YIRMUMAH beat them all to the punch by doing this same idea in the 2000 issue YIRMUMAH #1 published by Candida Press, which had the CRACKURZ #1 flipside.
In that issue, Bob fakes being mentally retarded to join the Special Olympics boxing league. Little did he know though at the end, Mike Tyson was the guy to beat. Hah! — Some of you out there HAVE this book, which ends with Bob in the ring.
It would be ridiculous for the Farrelly’s to sue them, but they are accusing them of this. If Trey or Matt, or their legal team ever needed help, I’d gladly offer up our work as proof that ideas are pretty general in nature, and neither of them, NOR Bob were the first to think of such a thing and do something with it or crack a joke about it, I’m sure.
And if a lawsuit goes through, and Trey and Matt have to pay something– then I’m going to go ahead an sue the Farrelly Brothers just on principle. Because, I could actually make the case that these guys are comic fans, that story was online back then for a spell too. — But yeah, Trey, Matt, your lawyers…. .contact me if you want copies of that published stuff. Perhaps I’ll scan it in for the website.

I’m in a rather endless class at my college this term where we studied copyright law for a small amount of time. We even had a lawyer from CoLA (colorado lawyers for the arts) come in and talk about copyright law. And you know what you can’t copyright? IDEAS. That idea has to be fixed in some kind of medium before it has any validity. So if you TALK about making something without ever actually MAKING it, and someone overhears you and goes out and follows through on that overheard idea, you have to let it go.
Go yirmumah, though for beating them to the punch!

I think if you talk about an idea and have reliable witnesses to back you up that someone got it from you and ran with it before you could, you would have a case against the thief. The witnesses’ affadavits would serve as a recording of the idea, that you are the creator, and whether the thief had access.

Nah. You can’t copyright just ideas that are spoken. It has to be in a tangible form, which can include a script of some kind. Its even better to have it on record that it’s been published.
Funny thing– if you search Yirmumah+Special Olympics on google, you’ll see reference to a review someone did of said issue back in 2000.

DJ, you should sue them both! Fuck being nice, RETIRE!

And this episode of South Park is now fairly old! Not as old as the Yirmumah one, but still…
An absolutely silly lawsuit. Are we sure they’re not closet Scientologists, and are just suing them in actuality for that Scientology epsiode?
(Oops - now I’M going to be sued! Jokes on them; I don’t have shit. Unless they want one of my cats.:D)

You say:
“Ok, so apparently, the Farrelly Brothers are suing South Park creators…”
Your link says:
“There’s been no mention of a lawsuit”
Way to read, no-read.

Woops— Well, they’re still accusing them of this… so I would expect a lawsuit of some sort if they’re serious.
December 15th, 2005 at 6:26 pm
Ok– all fixed now- Still, they’re accusing them of idea theft, which is a little lame.

Agreed. I mean, this whole “America is lawsuit happy” is getting really annoying. Hell, it’s been annoying for years…I really don’t need it migrating into Canada.

I would very much like to see scans of this comic. Sounds bitchin’.

I recall seeing an episode of “Married… With Children” a long time ago where Al Bundy enters a senior citizens’ athletic event, only to find that the old geezers were better than he thought. So maybe FOX should sue the South Park guys AND the Farrelly Brothers.
And while we’re at it, Jesus should SO sue the estate of C.S. Lewis, ’cause the whole Chronicles of Narnia thing? Totally based on Jesus.

Jesus is a lion? NOOOOOOOOO!
December 19th, 2005 at 12:45 pm
yeah…. fact of the matter is I was telling someone about the fact that I’ve helped with special olympics for years and years and how it’d actually be difficult to compete against some of them and yada yada and they’re like, oh ya they’re making a movie about that you know… yeah so i don’t believe there will be any lawsuit, otherwise i’ll just jump in on it too. I do love how the guy said his idea was so amazingly original or whatever, it isn’t in the slightest… i think it’s more about him thinking he has some sort of amazing artistic integrity or originality, but people have been talking about this kinda stuff since practically when the S.O. began. i hate hollywood
December 19th, 2005 at 11:15 pm
It’s all just marketing. (There’s no such thing as bad publicity in hollywood)
That’s why there’s a gap (the SP ep is older) and that’s why there probably won’t be any lawsuit.
The more gray areas the better, because people will A) Discuss it and B) Go see it to see how similar they are.
Marketing bastards.
