First up
Comic Book Challenge 2007
View the first commercial trailer for this year’s Comic Book Challenge. HBN makes a fast appearance.
— Also, I heard rumors of how the setup is going to look out there. I cannot wait to see the HBN standees– I wonder if they’d let me take them back as carry ons? Wouldn’t that be cool to have Iron Talon sitting on a plane? (I don’t think he’ll fit)–
Hero By Night News
I’ve been busy over the weekend working on some things for the collected edition of the Hero By Night miniseries, including a new cover and something else I can’t speak of. Also, I have pretty outstanding news on the horizon pertaining to the HBNiverse, but I don’t want to jinx myself so I’m waiting until it’s all official like. Needless to say, I’m excited.
DC unveils their webcomic plans
I wasn’t going to comment on this here, but people have been e-mailing me all morning to ask what I think. ( Well, 5 people. ) I’ve already posted my thoughts elsewhere– but my initial thought is, it sounds like a mix of Drunk Duck + Comic Book Challenge = Zudacomics — they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? Well, I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all, but I don’t know what it actually means for “webcomics” in general. I guess it could only be good for the term “webcomics”, but the target audience seems to be more the aspiring comic book creator than an actual webcomic creator like we know of now. The only thing I could think when reading the announcement was, that it sounded familiar. And if Fleen thinks so too, then bygummit, it’s so. — Also Heidi Mac’ asks “One big question remains…who will be the DJ Coffman of Zuda?” — I’d like to answer by saying, there couldn’t possibly be a DJ Coffman of Zuda, unless it was me. Because, quite frankly, I’m the master and there is no hire, suckah MCs call me sire. —
In summary, after thinking about it some this morning, I think ZUDA will be a good thing for new creators, because it possibly gives some new talented creators out there another way to be seen, make some money and maybe kickstart a career. Sure, the vultures are all going to sit by waiting for the IP contracts to go up so they can denounce it and warn creators to be careful with what they sign up for… but that goes without saying, right? The real truth is, if you want to do this for a living, you better get hustling and start drawing some comics and put the hard work in. If you only have one idea that you’re married to and afraid of sharing with anyone else as a partner, then the business of comics probably isn’t for you. Do the work. No better place to do that right now than in “webcomics.”
San Diego Calling
Comicon is closing in fast. I’ll be roaming around out there through Saturday. If I know you, or you want to meet up for a beer or a good old fashioned Fayette County style fist fight, please e-mail me. I think the only panel I’ll be sitting in on is “The Business of Webcomics” panel on Friday, with Scott Kurtz and Khoo from Penny Arcade– it’s at 3:30 in room 8. The Jack Kirby tribute panel is first thing Sunday morning, but I’ll be on a plane by then. I am sad about that.
iPhone update
I’m going to thank my wife again for the iPhone surprise. Every day I find a new way to use it. I just linked a cool web app for finding the cheapest gas prices in my zip code which rocks, there’s all sort of cool web apps I found through lifehacker.org. I was also able to put in my notes about things I wanted to accomplish when I’m out in San Diego, and remember people I’m supposed to meet up with for fisticuffs.

DJ -
I’m a regular at the View Askew site and there’s a comics thread. One of the posters also has been getting Hero By Night. Here’s his take:
Hero By Night #1-4 - I liked this miniseries about a guy named Jack King who becomes the superintendent of a rundown apartment building and discovers the secret lair of a superhero from the 1950s. Nice art and a decent story. I hope there is more to come.
