Day One: PittCon wrap up

Friday was pretty slow at the show, but still I did pretty well overall. Here’s a rundown of highlights…

- The first thing noticable… NO TRASHY WHORES!!! Hats off to Pittsburgh Comicon for not having a Soft Porn section with Playboy models from the 70s and Cinemax soft core film stars like Glorianne Gilbert or whoever. UGH. It was a relief to walk around and see it packed with comics of all kinds. So, one of my two major complaints with the con is seemingly solved. Next up, we gotta get that admission price down for people. 17 for a one day pass is a little much.

- Bumped into old friend Jim Rugg, (Street Angel) almost immediately and we wondered where our friend Ernie Stiner was set up. Shorty after Jim left, I noticed a bearded guy across the way with art magnets and cool designs, and the guy was looking at me, and then he waved at me, and damn if it wasn’t Ernie! He looked totally different — imagine a guy who use to be totally cleancut and wore an old school driving cap, and now suddenly, he has a beard and baseball cap! I felt like crap for not reckonizing him, but seriously, he looks TOTALLY different. Topping off the bumping into old friends, Shane Ronzio has a nice setup for his independent movie, with his film playing at the table as well.

- I look up and I see the main promoter of the show coming my way with a camera crew and lights and stuff– I’m thinking, “They couldn’t possibly be coming right at me… and if they are, what in the heck are they going to lay on me…. well, they wanted to setup their cameras right in front of my new blowup backdrop for the local Pittsburgh news KDKA! So, they sort of interviewed the promoter in front of my table, and I’ve yet to see the report yet, but I might be in there drawing. I was drawing a Llama saying “Oh Darn , I hope I’m not on TV. Still, of all the nice setups there and color images, I was frankly shocked that the promoter picked mine, especially when Joe Linsner was right across from me.

- Met some readers in person. I’m always shocked when people come up and they know all my work and treat me like I’m special. Honestly, it makes me uncomfortable– but I love meeting the people who actually read the strip as well though. And beyond that, I love running into people who have been collecting my comics since early 1998 with the original minicomics. We’ve come a long way, baby!

- FUnny thing– A group of teenagers (i think they were teens, sorry if not guys) came over to look at the BRICKS of silence, and the one kid was really digging it, then he said he was torn on buying one, because I WAS THE DJ COFFMAN WHO FOUGHT WITH SKETCHBATTLE or something. I immediately asked him who he was, turns out he’s new to that Sketchbattle site, but informed me that people are STILL talking about that pretty freshly. I told them it all boiled down to me not wanting to be involved in a contest that was rigged, and it was dumb of them to ask me to join, but then complaining when they got so many votes. Hopefully I swayed them to the Yirmumah side– he said he’d be back to buy a brick, we’ll see. He told me Sketchbattle guy actually “sold” his site or some crap. MEH. I can’t believe they still talk about that, that was what, October?? Nerds.

- Cracka Keith! I should of taken a photo of this mofo when he came in near the end of today wearing his DUMBLEDORE DIES t-shirt. Too funny! He wears it so damn proud!!! He’ll be there tomorrow, so I’ll get some pics of that guy…. the self appointed “funniest man in Fayette County”

- I told the real TONY I wouldn’t put any photos of him up, but I lied. He doesn’t know how to go online, so EFH HIM. Here’s a couple photos from today. I hope to take more photos tomorrow, I just lack things to be excited enough to take photos of. I was quickly reminded of how THE SAME all comicons are.

Wicked, DJ. If there’s anywhere us non-PA locals can get that video I think it would be something cool to see! Hope your day goes just as well tomorrow.

    On a side note:
Since you mentioned the kid who came up and was talking about the Sketchbattle drama, did you know that the Holy Bibble site (the guys you were up against during the hubbub) was hosted by the dudes who formerly owned Sketchbattle? So, very obviously (now) there was a bit more at stake than just a little voting dust up. Thought you might find that interesting, considering your odd run in today.

yeah, it was an odd run in for sure. Efh em though.

I don’t find that shocking at all about the HOly Bibble site being maintained by them. That guy I talked to was always really biased toward what he liked. He got h is though, right?

    :)
