Coq Roq gets sued by Slipknot

Smoking gun has the full legal filings–
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/0817052slipknot1.html

Now, originally when I heard this, I thought, “You gotta be kidding me!?” — but I didn’t know much about Slipknot as a band, or their trademarks, like one member wears a gasmask, another has dreads, another a Kabuki mask, etc…..

And the Coq Roq band, emulating their style, also wear dreads, a gasmask and a freakin Kabuki mask.

God… Burger King is Lame… again, I link you all to the…

COQ ROQ BLOCK!

That’s all we have to say about it.

I find this to be very funny.

    HA!

  2. keith2 Says:

I have so much respect for slipknot.

on a side note can i just call myself Keith now instead of Keith2 because you’ve choosen the name Cracka Keith and im lazy and dont want to have to stick a 2 next to my name anymore.

  3. Cracka Keith Says:

    Sure Keith!

  4. Jeege Says:

mwahahahahah. theres really not much of a case here, but nothing like a little controversy to get those damn stupid bird rockers out of the public eye.

  5. Mitch Clem Says:

Yeah right. A rock band in disguise, HMMMM? Why didn’t Splipknot sue the Locust when they formed? Why didn’t Kiss sue Slipknot?

  6. DJ Says:

Mitch, open your eyes a little, brother! Hey, I’m no Slipknot fan at all… if a band came along and painted their faces with STars and Cats, you damn well know KISS would sue!–

Until I heard the point that the ad agency had actually approached them about a voting ad an they turned them down– then the SAME ad agency makes a mock band with “Dreads” “Gas Mask” “Kabuki” and whatever— that’s a little too close and confusing with their own trademarks. — I mean, a trademark is something that identifies your product, and when a consumer gets confused… eh…. I can see their point in this.

Plus, it’s REAL fucking annoying. I Hope at least the suit kills those goddamn commercials!

  7. Mitch Clem Says:

To be fair, I only saw the ad once (I don’t actually have TV, I saw it while in an electronics store or a bar or something) and I remember them all being dressed up like chickens. I don’t remember any gas masks or kabuki whatsits. But maybe I just don’t remember it correctly.

    P.S. You can’t patent a dreadlock.

  8. DJ Says:

Obviously, you don’t understand Trademarks. It’s not just the dreadlock, it’s all the things put together…. and the fact the ad agency told their band they wanted to tap their demographic and age group— and when the band said NO…. they went to BK and made their own similar band….. nice.

If you woke up tomorrow, and saw a comic called “Nothing Nice To Talk About”, with very simliar style and subject matter— oh, I’m sure you’d be super pissed and learning about your own trademarks you might not even know you have! hahaha..

  9. Mitch Clem Says:

Fair enough. I guess I’m trying to give one corporation the benifit of the doubt over the other because I hate Slipknot but enjoy Burger King.

Lays just tried the same thing with Tom Waits, actually. In fact, I think like five companies before Lays have also all tried to do the same thing with Tom Waits, and he’s always successfully sued. But then again, his sound is a little more uniquely defined than “nu metal with too many drummers and spooky masks”.

  10. Brent Says:

When I first saw the commercials I saw GWAR. I thought, “Man I can’t believe they are so blatantly stealing their style.” I also am not a Slipknot fan thought so I hadn’t ever seen them.

  11. Keith2 Says:

FOR NOW ON I SHALL BE KNOWN AS KEITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    That is all.

  12. Eric Says:

Anyone else remember Mushroom head??? I thought they were stealing off of slipnot, then I think they were around longer…

  13. whymy Says:

Mushroomhead (with one exception) all uses similar looking black masks. Not really stealing off of slipknot.

But I think Slipknot should just take off the mask. Mudvayne took off all of the make-up, and now they are better for it.

  14. NeonMonk Says:

Slipknot probably don’t mind as much when a real band borrows their style. But when an advertising agency and corporation do it. Well, I mean c’mon.

  15. Khazor Says:

It’s just a stylistic choice, really. It’s admittedly partially for stage-gimmick, especially for the main drummer Joey Jordison — Even though you know it’s mask, it’s still bizarre to see such an expressionless face doing that insane drumming.
Originally, they had the masks because it was something to do. Once they became popular, they used the masks so that they could still go out in public, and not be harassed by the fanbase/hatebase because they were recognized.
…’Course, that’s getting slowly nullified, what with Joey appearing maskless with The Murder Dolls, and Corey Taylor maskless, fronting Stone Sour, but ya know. Whatever.

Anyway, more power to them — That commercial is fucking annoying.

  16. Relyt Says:

all the slipknot fans tried to argue that mushroomhead stole their mask idea, but they all shutup when they realized that mushroomhead have been around since 1993.

masks and gimmicks have been around since the time of KISS.

  17. Adam Says:

I’m glad this happened. Slipknot can stop those shitty commercials and we can all relax. Stolen or not, it needs to stop and this is a great way to do it.

  18. L.O.T.G.A. Says:

I could be wrong, but I believe I saw an interview with Mushroomhead a few years ago where one of the members said that they’d recieved a Cease and Desist order on Slipknot’s behalf for the whole mask gimmick that kept the band wrapped up in court for a while. I guess it kept their first record on a major label from being released by like a year or something.

Oh well Coq Roq still sucks.

  19. wristslitter Says:

Mushroomhead should be suing Slipknot and Coq Roq, if anyone sues,,Mushroomhead was to ink a deal with Roadrunner records, when the deal fell through, after that Slipknot just happened to sign with Roadrunner,,and it just happened that they wore masks , similiar to Mushroomheads, Mushroomhead then decided to go with different masks. I like both Mushroomhead and Slipknot though,,they may wear masks, but they dont sound alike..Just thought I clue you guys in…I say let the Coq Roqqers be.
