Yeah, we're working and Platinum is actually putting other creators to work and PAYING THEM, (unlike manyother indy comic companies and just about ALL webcomic publishers)

I'm honestly happy for the artists and writers and that's why I posted about it. It's a shame that people just can't be happy for other creators-- these dudes were just mentioned in Entertainment Weekly!

Tell you what, I want to see the same people complain the next time Bon Jovi has a top selling album and the record companies are sending a thousand people to store to wait outside..... same with the next Apple Computer launch.

Anyway-- -yeah, I work with Platinum people every day and they're top class in my book. NOT just because they're paying me.

you know I agree with you DJ. I did the advertising and marketing thing for 5 years, and it happens with EVERY industry. It's called incentive money, or promotional money (if they DID give retailers money, it was to promote the book and the company in their stores) You're paying to put your name and product in front of people. And I also agree that nobody else has come along with money to do that kind of thing before. I bought a copy of Cowboys and Aliens from my retailer (the only one left in the store when I was in there) and he was selling it for $4.99. not .75 cents. He sold over 50 in his store alone.

You know what, you're also right that it's 15K+ people seeing an ad in that book for a comic I'm working on, as well as a full page previews ad. People can badmouth all they want, there aren't a ton of companies out there that actually credit colorists on their projects, and Plaintum is doing a great job of getting me exposure (oh and they're paying really well too in case someone thinks that I'm getting taken for a ride)

And another thing, since I don't say much EVER about all this crap. People say "no offense to the creators invovled" "we're looking out for the artists, creators etc...." bullshit. You're HURTING us. We're getitng paid, and paid well. I'm a full time colorist and illustrator. This is how I support my wife and kids, pay my mortgage, and people are talking shit about a company that is helping me stay in business and put food on my table. You're badmouthing people that YOU'RE NOT WORKING WITH. You're saying that you don't mean any offense to the creators, but what you're doing is hurting our image, our sales, and the image and sales of the company employing us. I have a lot of clients, I do a lot of coloring and painting, and Platinum is one of my BEST clients. So if you don't like something, fine, big deal. Build a bridge and GET OVER IT. My 10 year old knows that if she doesn't have anything nice to say about someone, or something, to just keep her mouth shut. But it's pretty obvious that writing in a blog, or writing for an online website, gives people the authority, omniscience, and actively exonerates them from any bad feelings or guilt that would stem from knowing that they are hurting the livelihood of someone who loves comics and is busting their butt to do something they love and make a living. I guarantee that if anyone badmouthing Platinum, or their books, were in MY position, they would have NO complaints.

So....I think I'll just get back to coloring now, since regardless of what everyone seems to think, I have bills to pay and comics to make.

I think what Platinum did was no different than what other large comic companies have done with selected (larger) stores. Advertising co-ops? Etc.. every entertainment medium has them-- DIamond even has a service for doing just about the same thing in putting out free materials to the shops, but you have to go through them.

If other independent companies could afford to do so, they'd do it. And really, it hurts nothing at all, except some creators or smaller publishers get bent out of shape that they can't afford to do so. Do you think Platinum bought all of it's issues??? That's insane. No one is willing to concede that perhaps some of those sales came from the fact they got press everywhere for the daily webcomic their running, and possibly people actually bought it. If retailers thought it was complete CRAP, they wouldn't bother, TRUST ME. We're talking peanuts there, not major payola to retailers. A few bucks a copy isn't worth their time.

I can't defend Cowboys and Aliens, only to say, you've seen retailers saying "Meh"? What retailers? Where? How many? Or have you been reading online gossip columns and disgruntled creator blogs?

The fact is, Entertainment Weekly named them the #1 selling GN, and I'm happy for the creators. I'm fucking happy for me too, because hey, there's an ad for HBN in those books. I don't really care anymore what 12 people think on the internet in regards to the direct market system, or painting Platinum in a bad light. Platinum is winning.

DJ, I love you, but c'mon. Platinum basically paid stores to stock the book. I could piss in a notebook, photocopy it, and pay every store to take it for free, and that would be the number one book.

It wasn't number one because it was good; it was number one because Platinum paid every store for stocking the book. Now, if there were a multitude of positive reviwes of the book, I'd say it was a success. But I haven't seen that. All I've seen are retailers going "meh".

I love you, DJ, but you're drinking the kool-aid WAY too hard.

Oops, my mistake, you meant #1 in sales (http://captionbox.net/loosepages/?p=222). I didn't know EW tracked comic sales.

Congrats to the C&A crew!

Are you sure EW named it the #1 GN of the year? Because I was reading their "best of" list and this is what they named "Best Graphic Novel," apparently:
