YIRMUMAH’S BEST WEBCOMICS of 2005!

As posted in yesterday’s entry, I decided it would be for the good of the world for Yirmumah to compose it’s own list of BEST WEBCOMICS of 2005. I also decided it wouldn’t be fair for us to list ourselves on the list. I changed my mind overnight, and I think you should all know, truly, we are on this list, and it were numbered, we’d be FIF. Just remember that. Now.. onto the REAL BEST WEBCOMICS of 2005.

“Joe and Monkey” by Zach “the attack” Miller.
This comic is just awesome in it’s awesomeness. And i promised you all awesomeness today, didn’t I? I didn’t let you down.

“Nothing Nice to Say” by Mitch “the bitch” Clem. (sorry Mitch, bitch rhymes with Mitch. You lose)
This comic has a huge cult following but is usually never named on any of the “webcomic news” or review sites. And that’s probably JUST how the rebel who makes it likes it. But seriously…. if we’re having a BEST OF list and leaving Clem’s comic off of it, we’re doing a diservice to the children of Iraq and all Muslim nations. (This comic is especially good when Mitch actually gets around to posting on a regular schedule. BURN!)

“ATLAND” - By Nate “font boy” Piekos (font boy because he runs blambot)
If there WAS a number list to this BEST OF, I think Atland might be #1. Let’s be real here people… The Art and coloring in Atland is by FAR better than just about any webcomic out there. Again, it’s another diservice to not mention this on webcomics news or review sites. Also, while not an actual RPG or gaming strip, this is probably the BEST RPG or gaming strip out there right now. Does that make sense?

“The Kenmore” by Brandon “the truck” J. Carr
It usually takes time for a webcomic to debut and kickass, but Brandon is proving otherwise. This comic features the lovable IAGO talking deviled egg character. And I’m a sucker for “wacky” comics. Brandon is a top notch cartoonist.

“Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal” by Zach Weiner (heh, I said weiner)
SMBC makes my list, because it’s a rarity to see a one panel webcomic that’s actually funny on a regular basis. And this comic has been around FOREVER. It’s been especially consistantly funny in 2005. I also like the fact that the whole site looks hand drawn on purpose, not because the cartoonist actually sucks.

“Beaver and Steve” by James “I’m out of catchy phrases” Turner
What more could I say about BnS that hasn’t already been said. (author’s note: “BnS” is me being lazy and not wanting to type out Beaver and Steve”, better luck next year, BUTTERNUTSQUASH!)
Seriously though. Beaver and Steve won some award as best new strip this year… why the heck wouldn’t a BEST OF 2005 not have this on there! And look at it!? I mean, wow. The guy really has a great, fun style, and puts a lot into his work.

“Panda Xpress” by ?? PX??
Ok, I don’t know the name of the creator, which is bad on him or her… but still, take a look at the work on this comic. Basically, it’s about a girl and her Panda….. The art is wonderful to look at, and should make all of you slackers or artsy fartsy hacks feel like CRAP. Come on people, let’s step up the game a bit, people!

“Melonpool” by Steve “how do you spell relief” Troop
Melonpool gets on the list for taking a giant step and redoing it’s whole format in favor of the BIG full color dailies. Again, it should be noted that it will most likely come down to me and Troop in the Daily Grind competion, as Troop seems to be pretty dedicated to his work and staying ahead. (author’s note: I’ll still whoop him.)

__________________________

And that’s it. Our list beats the crap out of other BEST OF lists out there. It’s a fact!

Your list has Steve Troop on it? Then it cannot be wrong.

  4. Jur Says:

    just awesome!

  5. zanbowser Says:

solid… i dig that list totally, DJ, except for the fact that you’re not pimping the Yirm on there too (well, except in the blurb, but that doesn’t count).

i think we can all agree that on any “top list” of comics, Yirmumah! deserves a spot for DJ’s dedication not only to the work (phenomenal), but also to his fans and the “job” at large (magnificent). DJ’s work here speaks to his dedication, skill (of the extraordinary variety), patience, and delightfully wicked sense of humour: this earns him a spot easily, by my reckoning.

    bravo, DJ. bravo.

    (PS - Zack, you’re t3h 4w350m3, too - Joe & Monkey rules, even if you’re a first-post whore. ^_~)

Tinselbum! Now you know why most cat owners don’t use tinsel. Trust me on this one, I’m a future cat-lady. You know the type.

Atland is a seriously well drawn comic, it’s print-comic quality. Hm…another great webcomic is Orneryboy. Ever read it?

  7. Tom Brazelton Says:

MY COMIC WAS NOT MENTIONED IN YOUR “BEST OF” LIST!

I WILL HATE YOU FOREVER, D.J. COFFMAN!

    :: runs off crying ::

  9. Stuart Robertson Says:

Ornery Boy is one of my favs… and it’s on my list. Then again… most of them are. :-)

  10. Stuart Robertson Says:

That should be: Ornery Boy / My List

  11. Phil Kahn Says:

Nice list, DJ. A lot of good stuff on there. All worthy of recognition.

And yes! Continue to spread the gospel on Panda Xpress!

  12. Jeege Says:

    Good choices all

That PandaXpress site has some really amazing art.

  13. PX! Says:

PX! would like to offer up a sincere w00t, w00t. PX! has never been listed on anyones “Best of” for anything. We do believe however that our digital mother that spat forth its seed to create us, the PX! automated response team, would be proud. Were she more than a box of wires and such.
We would like to second the statement that Nate Piekos and his Atland comic are indeed the “bomb-diggity”.
“YourMother” comic is also one that gives the panda a chuckle now and again.
    We appreciate that.
    Sincerly and most digitally,
    -PX! Crew

  14. Joe Zabel Says:

This is a great list of comics, DJ! BTW, the Examiner had favorable reviews of Beaver and Steve and Atland.

  15. Brad Hawkins Says:

Despite the rather glaring omission of my own comic (the omission of the comics of others leaving comments was of course justified), this list is very good. SMBC in particular is hysterical. A word about The Kenmore, though, you mentioned that it was a new strip, which it is, but it grew out of a strip called Between the Panels which has been going for four years. Whether the artist did anything before that, I have no idea.

  16. Brandon J. Carr Says:

Wow, Brad…every time someone actually REMEMBERS Between The Panels, I get a little giggly burst. Thanks!

Aside from BTP and The Kenmore, I did a strip called Crater City with Jeff Kidd (no longer available online), several Quantum stories with Chuck Morrison (http://www.qcomics.net) and the short anthology series Iago’s Scrambled Tales for PV Comics (http://betweenthepanels.pvcomics.com/ist.htm). Not that you asked, but…you know…

Thanks for the nod, DJ. I’m going to keep kicking some ass to try and stay on the list for next year!

  17. DrakeLycan Says:

sweet… nice to see Mitch from NN2S made the list, although who know what disatsters such recognition could bring…

Damn that Retardakitty is omnipotent in all of his retardedness… :)

Out of interest… what would “Punks and Nerds” ( www.punksandnerds.com )rate on the list?

  18. The Kenmore Blog » Blog Archive » So much to report! Says:

[…] Mommy Says I’m Pretty The Kenmore has made a list! Yirmumah’s DJ Coffman posted his list of the best webcomics in 2005 and we ranked…well, there aren’t ranks, but we ranked! […]

  19. Nate Piekos Says:

Thanks for the kind words, Deej. It’s appreciated.
