20 Years…. where does it go?

I remember I was 10… and totally sled riding down this killer hill on the South Side of Connellsville. They had the road closed it was so icy and messed up– After sledding all morning, I came in to see the news about the astronauts. I also remember vividly, not really grasping the fact that it was real, but it was shocking that these people blew up. It was the first time I thought… WOW, did I just watch people die in an explosion???

Then I made my Dad drive me to Spotto’s, a sporting goods store that also housed a small toy section where they carried GI Joes. I bought Junkyard and his dog Mutt, and Chuckles and his dog, whatever his name was.

Sorry… photographic memory was kicking in…. that is shocking to me that I remember that. I also remember that I had gotten the GI Joe Oil rig looking “battle platform” for Christmas that year, and that very day I remember making Chuckles, who was the first and probably the last GIJOE to sport a Hawaiian shirt, I remember making it up like he was an undercover fed acting like a tourist who just wandered aboard this Oil Rig spying for the government.. and I played like this new team were helping rescue the astronauts from the water…. it was discovered later that day that COBRA was responsible for blasting the Shuttle out of the sky! And this just could not stand. All of the astronauts were saved by the Joe team, and Cobra was punished, and a group of rogue dreadnaughts arrested for the crime.

Man, I wish reality could immitate art sometimes. YOu know?

I had that G.I. Joe oil rig playset. It was the bomb.

I remember watching the Challenger explosion live. I don’t know how you were out sledding, DJ since it was on a Tuesday.

I was in school and they brought in a television to show everyone. It was a big deal. Then the explosion happened and the teachers quickly turned off the TV and started huddling together to figure out what was happening.

We were 8 years old, so we had no clue. It’s kind of funny at the time, it didn’t really register that they were dead.

    What a weird memory.

  2. DJ Says:

School was closed, because we had a major snowfall here and roads were closed… hence, us sledriding down the big hill that had been closed off to traffic and totally covered with snow and ice. WEE!

i was only a year old at the time and from what i know taking a nap when it happened, but i did want to make one little correction to your post. Junkyard was the dog’s name and the G.I.Joe was named Mutt… i’m remembering this mainly because on the TV show it was usually a conversation point with Mutt.

  4. DJ Says:

Woops you’re right– i mixed those up.
