Another lame “grumpy” webcomic blog reviewer
JUST what the world needed! Another “I’m going to be anonymous and act grumpy and give my HONEST opinion on webcomics and tell it like it is!” weblog. — But hey, he reviewed YIRMUMAH so I’ll do the guy a huge favor and link to him– and let this be a lesson, that if you generally write things about Yirmumah, good or bad, I’ll usually link to them… press is press.
Now this cornhole didn’t like Yirmumah all that much, and that’s fine– calling my comic “cookie cutter” makes me question his brain function, when that term would be better suited to the myriad of cut and paste comics out there, and evenly slightly comparing Yirmumah to Manga or something– weird, he probably lacks the spectrum of knowledge about comics to find better examples of why he doesn’t like it….. but anyway, enjoy THE COMIC GRUMP. — I posted in the comments section directing him to the new ORIGIN storyline, because he might like that better, since it pretty much abandoned everything he hated about the old style Yirmumah. Who says you can’t please em all?
I liked how he called El Goonish Shive a wet dog fart. That’s clever.

He doesn’t like the llama?!? What? I’m agast! Dude, a gun toting, foul-mouthed, pyrotic, kleptomaniac llama is golden. Those are some of my favourite strips. You could base an entirely new spin-off comic on the Adventures of Llama!
Anyway…enough about that.
I find that Yirmumah is not one of those “in-between” comics. You know the ones that you can sometimes go to for a bit of a chuckle but you would never add to your favourites? You LOVE this comic or you HATE it.
I have to admit with the ORIGIN storyline you may pick up a few more fans that aren’t into pop culture, gag a day type things, but I think Yirmumah has damn good DNA, regardless which direction it points in.
You have DJ, who works his ass off.
I mean it. I have rarely seen, in the webcomics world, someone that does so much and does everything consistently well. And then! Adds even more shit to his plate and keeps doing the OTHER shit consistently and consistently well.
Does GRUMP know that Yirmumah is not your only project? Has he seen any of your other work?
Bleh, I’ve gone on. Sorry about that.
I’ll hop off your jock before the Missus kicks my ass.

I’ve been reading the Comics Grump ever since it started, and I have to say that this has been my least favorite review so far. He is usually quite accurate in his opinions but this time he was way off.
For starters, comparing your art to manga? What the fuck? Manga’s “cookie cutter” problem is that you can pick up mangas from a zillion different artists and most of them will look like they came from the same person. DJ being one guy doing one comic, it would be consistancy, not cookie cutter.
For another, parody is not original thought? Just because the characters referenced in a joke aren’t original doesn’t mean the joke itself isn’t. Are all comedians who do imitations no longer funny, just because they’re not coming up with an original wacky voice?
And what the fuck is wrong with having a talking llama? I thought this guy was all for originality. Maybe DJ should make his characters college age guys who sit on a couch and play video games. I mean, he compared you to CAD, so I guess it can only go up from there, right?
Seriously, I like most of the guy’s reviews, especially the El Goonish Shive and Press Start to Play reviews, but his opinions on your comic were just plain awful. You’re one of the most original, talented, and all around best web comic artists out there, this guy’s just having too much fun ripping on people.

This guy sounds like a smartass with no substance. Plus he limits his comments to ‘Blogger’, which already makes him a chicken. I don’t think there is anything ‘wacky’ about the Drama Llama. The reason I keep on comin’ back to Yir-Land is because this comic is hands down one of the most original ones out there. There are some Yirmumah comics that have approached what I think is near-comic perfection. You’re right DJ, there is no pleasing everyone, and to some extent people either ‘get it’ or they don’t. I loved Ren and Stimpy too, but a lot of people HATED that one. There is no accounting for some peoples’ tastes.
Do your thang and don’t compromise for cranks. Do what clicks for you and don’t worry about the people who don’t get it. That reviewer thinks he has is all figured out… well, it’s always easy to criticize. Personally, I joined the bandwagon here pretty recently, and I started reading from the beginning, and I don’t see that the early stuff is any less wonderful. Keep up the good stuff!

You know what I always say about these kinds of people…
“Fuck ‘em!”

Fuck’em! You’ve worked your ass off for years doing what you like to do. Who cares if there’s the occasional fart joke and parody, at least their done well. It was your utter hilarious star wars parodies that have turned me into a daily reader. I was able to see your other really great work. I think it’s awsome that all your hard work has paid off for you. Best of luck with Hero by Night and screw that jealous little prick.

I agree. Not only could but should
(If you had the time, that is. But think of the TV and movie rights!

yirmumah.net is the only web comic I have b’marked. A comic critic…pathetic
August 5th, 2006 at 10:11 am
I agree with all of the above comments.
Especially the “fuck’em” bit. Why bother even reading the guys reviews, hes a nobody, a little wannabe that just thougth “i wanna make a blog too”. Somebody like you replying on his blog makes him cream his pants for god sake.

He lost me when he went off on the llama as well. If you don’t get the llama then Yirmumah is not for you. And we don’t want or need you here. I respect the fact that DJ can be controversial and still use his real name as opposed to those who hide behind a made up identity. If these people are so sure of their opinions lets see your real name. Hell, give us your phone number as well as an address. I’m sure a few of us Yirmumah fans would love to pay your skinny little carcass a visit. To discuss. . . uh. . . the bible, yeah, the bible.

I have absolutely no respect for people like this. Those who who make it a job to sit and be critical of other people’s work are only demonstrating that they lack any talent. At least the talent to create something original.
If all you can do is be critical of webcomics, the first thing you need to do is draw your own. Let’s see what this grump idiot can come up with.
Otherwise, this fellow just needs to shut his flapping bean tube.

The man seems to be a troll. I joined the website to tell him so. He had a few points about snarkiness and parodies… BUT THE NAME OF THE SITE IS YIRMUMAH!!! duh… DJ can be a jerk sometimes… but he is HONESTLY in-your-face. Grump is just trolling.

Wow. I’ve seen really shitty reviewers before, but this guy - I don’t think he can even CALL himself that. This guy just bitches about how he hates stuff without understanding the concept of EXPLAINING WHY in any sort of logical fashion. ::wince::
Dear Jeebus. If there must be webcomic “reviewers,” please let there be some more with a goddamn lick of sense to balance out all of the mouth-breathing asshats like that guy. The end.

Yes. He fails the Eric Burns test of webcomic criticism.

The Grump doesn’t use a made-up name. He uses someone else’s name, that of a respected journalist, and claims to be doing the world a favor by it:
“I took his name as my own in the hopes of spreading his name to people who might follow the same path I did.”
Identity theft and messiah complex rolled into one.
